Motorola and eSIM

Motorola supports eSIM across most recent Edge and Razr devices, and the first two Razr foldables were eSIM-only with no SIM tray at all.

How to check on the phone

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs
  2. Tap Add SIM, then Download a SIM instead
  3. North American units word the same page as Download a SIM instead

Things to know

  • The moto g line sold in Thailand is mostly physical SIM — the ones that reliably carry eSIM are Edge and Razr.
  • The 2019 Razr has no SIM tray at all — remove the eSIM and there is no physical fallback.
Compatibility information is compiled from manufacturer specifications and public carrier documentation. We do not test every handset ourselves, and the same model can differ by sales market, so always check your own device's settings before buying a plan.

Where the eSIM menu sits on Motorola

Motorola's support pages for the razr ultra 2025 and moto edge 60 pro use the same route: connect to Wi-Fi if you have no network, go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs & mobile network, tap the option to download and set up an eSIM, then follow the on-screen steps. Motorola's software stays close to stock Android, so the button may read Download a SIM instead or Add SIM depending on the version.

The same pages explain how to tell whether the phone takes two physical SIMs: go to Settings → About phone → Device details, and if you see both SIM status (sim slot 1) and SIM status (sim slot 2), it does. To remove an eSIM: Settings → System → Reset options → Erase eSIMs → Erase. Motorola stresses that erasing an eSIM does not cancel the service and should only be done when needed.

Market caveats

  • Motorola's pages say the phone might support eSIM and to check with the carrier, so market and carrier matter even within one model.
  • Most moto g units sold in Thailand are physical SIM; Edge and Razr are the lines that carry eSIM consistently, as the table above shows.
  • The 2019 Razr and Razr 5G have no SIM tray. Erase every eSIM and there is no fallback line, so do not use Erase eSIMs before a trip.

Check your own Motorola before you buy a plan

  1. Open the Phone app and dial *#06#. If the screen shows an EID (a 32-digit number), the handset has an eSIM chip. If you see only IMEI numbers, treat it as unconfirmed and carry on with the next check, because some phones do not show the EID on this screen.
  2. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs & mobile network. If there is a button to add or download an eSIM, the software for your unit's market has the feature switched on.
  3. Find the model code under Settings → About phone and compare it with the manufacturer's spec page for the country you bought it in. The model code is more reliable than the marketing name, because one name can cover several market variants.
  4. If the phone is second-hand or imported, ask the seller whether it is network locked. A unit locked to an overseas carrier usually refuses another operator's profile even when an EID is present.

Installing an eSIM on a Motorola, step by step

  1. 1Install in Thailand before you flyConnect to stable Wi-Fi and install the eSIM while you are still at home. If the scan fails you still have time to contact the shop, which beats troubleshooting at the arrival airport with no data.
  2. 2Open the add-eSIM menuOn a Motorola, go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs & mobile network → the download-and-set-up-eSIM option and choose to scan the QR code. If the QR code is on the same phone and you cannot scan it, choose to enter the activation details by hand (the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your email).
  3. 3Label the lineRename the new line, for example Travel or the country name, so you do not mix it up with your Thai SIM when choosing the data line.
  4. 4Leave it off until you landIf the plan's validity starts on first network connection, keep the eSIM line switched off and turn it on only when you reach the destination.
  5. 5Turn on data roaming for the eSIM lineMost travel eSIMs run as roaming on a local network. If the line shows signal but no data, switch on Data roaming in that eSIM line's settings.

Switching the data line while travelling

On a dual-SIM Motorola, calls and texts can use a different line from mobile data. The setting to change is the mobile data line, found at Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Mobile data.

  • Set mobile data to the travel eSIM and keep your Thai SIM for calls and texts, so bank OTP messages still arrive.
  • Switch off Data roaming on the Thai SIM, so the phone cannot fall back to it and run up roaming charges.
  • If the menu offers automatic data switching during calls (labelled Mobile data switching or similar), turn it off while abroad.
  • Back in Thailand, move mobile data back to the Thai SIM, then turn off or delete the expired eSIM line.

FAQ

Does my Motorola take two physical SIMs?+

Check Settings → About phone → Device details, as Motorola's guide describes. If both sim slot 1 and sim slot 2 are listed, it does.

Does erasing an eSIM on a Motorola cancel the plan?+

No. Motorola says erasing an eSIM does not cancel the service, but a deleted profile usually cannot be reinstalled from the same QR code.

Can a tray-less Razr run a travel eSIM alongside my Thai number?+

Your Thai number would also need to be an eSIM, and the phone must allow two eSIMs active at once. Try the install in Thailand before you leave; if only one profile can be active, switch only when you need to.

Do newer moto g models have eSIM?+

Some do in some markets, but most units sold in Thailand do not. Check SIMs & mobile network and *#06# on the actual phone.
