How much data you actually need
About 500MB–1GB a day is usually enough for maps, chat and photos, since trips are short and hotels have Wi-Fi. If you take video calls every day, allow closer to 1.5GB a day.
When you land
The gateway is Brunei International Airport (BWN) at Bandar Seri Begawan. By land you cross to Malaysian Sarawak at Kuala Lurah for Limbang and Sungai Tujoh for Miri, while the Temburong district is linked by the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge. There is also a ferry from Muara port to Labuan.
Where coverage changes
Bandar Seri Begawan and the coastal belt out to Kuala Belait have continuous coverage, and the Kampong Ayer water village works fine. Will I be out of contact in Ulu Temburong National Park?+
Deep in the forest, where you travel by longboat up the rivers, you will be without signal for most of the day. That is why trips are normally run through operators with their own communications. Before leaving Bandar Seri Begawan, tell whoever is waiting when you expect to return, and save your guide's and hotel's numbers offline.
Does a Brunei plan keep working in Malaysia?+
For mobile plans, Brunei and Malaysia are separate countries, even though driving across to Miri or Limbang takes very little time. If your trip covers both, check the country list on the plan before you buy, or have a second option ready for the stretch you spend in Sarawak.
