Central African Republic eSIM

The Central African Republic has almost no tourism infrastructure, and most people who travel there are aid staff, researchers or visitors heading for the Sangha rainforest reserves in the southwest. That makes the phone the planning desk: confirming a driver, holding a room, checking whether a road is passable that week, and staying reachable by a colleague in Bangui. Outside the capital the power supply is unreliable and hotel Wi-Fi dies with it, so carrying your own data and a charged power bank is a basic requirement rather than a comfort.

How much data you actually need

Expect roughly 300MB–1GB a day, mostly WhatsApp messages and voice notes, maps and email. If you need to upload field photos or join a video call, budget more and do it while you are still in Bangui rather than upcountry.

When you land

Bangui M'Poko (BGF) is the only international airport and is served by a handful of flights a week. Overland, the busiest route is the western crossing at Béloko opposite Garoua-Boulaï in Cameroon, the corridor that carries most freight up from the port of Douala, and there is a river crossing by boat from Bangui over the Ubangi to Zongo on the DR Congo side. Get your line attached before you leave the terminal.

Where coverage changes

Bangui works normally and towns like Berbérati, Bouar, Bambari and Bangassou have service inside the built-up area. Between them, on hours of unpaved road, you should expect nothing at all. Treat the Dzanga-Sangha reserve around Bayanga, the eastern forest and the northern zone towards the Chad border as out of range, download offline maps and save the numbers that matter to the device before you leave the last town.

Cities travellers ask about

  • BanguiRiverside capital on the Ubangi and the starting point for every route in the country.
  • BayangaGateway to the Dzanga-Sangha forest for gorillas and forest elephants; plan to be offline.
  • BerbératiMain western town and a rest stop on the road towards the Cameroon border.
  • BouarOn the Bangui–Garoua-Boulaï road, with ancient megalith sites nearby.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp, which drivers, lodges and local organisations answer fastest
  • Google Maps or OsmAnd with the region downloaded for offline use
  • Google Translate with the French pack downloaded offline

FAQ

Do I need to speak French there?+

Some French helps a great deal. It is the official language, Sango is what people actually speak to each other across the country, and English speakers are mostly confined to the international organisations in Bangui. Download the offline French pack before you go, because the places you most need a translation — checkpoints and upcountry markets — are exactly the places where you are least likely to have signal.

What should I prepare for communications outside Bangui?+

Assume you may be without signal for days at a time. What actually works is leaving your route and a check-in time with someone in Bangui before you go, saving maps, documents and phone numbers to the device, and carrying a power bank for the outages. Organisations that work in the remote prefectures generally rely on satellite phones, because the mobile network genuinely does not reach those areas.

How do people reach the Dzanga-Sangha forest?+

Most visitors fly or drive southwest from Bangui to Bayanga, which takes a long time and always has to be arranged in advance with a lodge or an operator. Some people enter from the Cameroonian or Congolese side instead, since the same forest block runs across all three countries. The practical point is to confirm every booking while you still have signal, because once you are in the forest you cannot fix arrangements online.

When does a Central African Republic eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
