Djibouti eSIM

Djibouti is small but geologically extreme: Lake Assal below sea level, volcanic desert, and the Gulf of Tadjoura where people swim with whale sharks in season. Most trips are full-day excursions out of the capital and back again, so booking a four-wheel-drive with a driver or a boat happens almost entirely by phone. The heat also drains batteries faster than you expect, which is a good reason to carry a power bank every single day.

How much data you actually need

About 500MB–1.5GB a day covers maps, WhatsApp and photos. If you upload underwater clips every evening or work from your room between excursions, budget closer to 2GB a day.

When you land

Djibouti–Ambouli (JIB) is the airport and sits very close to the city. By sea there is the Port of Djibouti and passenger boats across the gulf to Tadjoura and Obock. Overland, Loyada leads to Somaliland and Galafi is the crossing on the Ethiopian road, while the Addis Ababa–Djibouti railway uses Nagad station outside the centre. Get the line attached before you leave the terminal.

Where coverage changes

Djibouti City and the main road out to Lake Assal are fine, and towns such as Ali Sabieh, Dikhil, Tadjoura and Obock have service within the town itself. It thins noticeably at Lac Abbé near the Ethiopian border, across the Grand Bara desert plain, in the Day forest up in the Goda mountains, and out on the water in the Gulf of Tadjoura. Download maps and the coordinates of your destination before every trip out of the city.

Cities travellers ask about

  • Djibouti CityCapital and port; the base for nearly every day trip in the country.
  • Lake AssalAfrica's lowest point, a salt lake reachable as a day trip.
  • TadjouraOld town on the north side of the gulf, reached by boat or road.
  • Ali SabiehSouthern town on the railway line, near the Grand Bara desert.
  • ObockQuiet northern coastal town; a seasonal base for whale shark trips.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp for arranging drivers, boats and dive guides
  • Google Maps or Maps.me with the whole country saved offline
  • Google Translate with offline French and Arabic packs

FAQ

When is whale shark season in Djibouti?+

People go between roughly November and February in the Gulf of Tadjoura, though it varies year to year with sea conditions and water temperature, so ask the boat operator directly before fixing your dates. Trips are full days on the water and usually have no signal once you are out in the gulf, so tell your accommodation when you expect to be back and start the day with a full charge.

How hot does it get, and does that affect the phone?+

Very hot, especially in mid-year, and the heat genuinely affects phones. A device left in direct sun can dim the screen or throttle itself, and the battery drains faster than usual when GPS runs all day. Keep the phone shaded or in a bag rather than on the dashboard, carry a power bank, and download maps in advance so you are not doing heavy work in full sun.

Do I need a four-wheel-drive with a driver?+

For places like Lac Abbé or the desert routes, yes. There is no signposting, no fuel along the way, and some sections need someone who can read soft sand. A local driver knows the route and can get help if something goes wrong. Agree the price and the return time clearly in advance over WhatsApp, and save the number to your phone in case you lose signal en route.

When does a Djibouti eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
