🇸🇿 Eswatini

Eswatini eSIM

Eswatini is small and most visitors drive in from South Africa, often after Johannesburg or a Kruger trip. A typical visit is self-drive: the Ezulwini valley, the game reserves and the craft markets, which means maps stay open and border post opening hours matter. Having your own data also helps with reserve bookings and with reaching camp staff, who answer WhatsApp far faster than they answer email.

How much data you actually need

About 500MB–1.5GB a day, since maps run while you drive and WhatsApp handles bookings. If you stream in the evening at the lodge or tether other devices in the car, budget closer to 2GB a day.

When you land

King Mswati III International (SHO) has limited flights, so most people arrive by road from South Africa. The busiest crossing is Ngwenya opposite Oshoek on the route from Johannesburg; Lavumisa connects to Golela for anyone coming up from Durban, Mahamba serves the south, and Lomahasha faces Namaacha on the road to Mozambique. Check the opening hours of your border post before you set off.

Where coverage changes

The Mbabane–Manzini corridor and the Ezulwini valley, which is where most of the country's activity sits, work well, as does the main road linking them. It thins going up into Malolotja in the northwest, inside Hlane and Mkhaya, and along the Lubombo escarpment in the east. Download the country map before you cross the border, because the handover between networks at the crossing can leave you briefly without service.

Cities travellers ask about

  • MbabaneHighland capital, cooler than the surrounding country and often misty.
  • ManziniThe largest commercial town, with a big market and dense traffic.
  • Ezulwini ValleyWhere lodges, craft markets and the Mlilwane reserve sit close together.
  • LobambaCeremonial and parliamentary centre, home to the country's main traditional events.
  • Hlane Royal National ParkEastern wildlife park where signal is patchy at some of the camps.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp for lodges, park camps and guides
  • MTN MoMo for everyday payments and top-ups
  • Google Maps with the whole country downloaded for the self-drive

FAQ

How long is the drive from Johannesburg?+

It is a comfortable single day's drive if you leave early, most often through the Ngwenya–Oshoek post. The unpredictable part is the queue at the border, which grows a lot on long weekends and public holidays. Check your crossing's opening hours before you go, make sure your rental paperwork permits taking the car across, and do not plan to reach a park camp after sunset.

Can I pay in South African rand?+

Generally yes, because the Eswatini lilangeni is pegged one-to-one to the rand and shops usually accept rand. Your change, though, tends to come back in lilangeni, which you cannot spend outside the country, so avoid holding much of it near the end of your trip. Cards work at malls and town accommodation, but carry cash for the craft markets.

Is there signal inside the game reserves?+

It depends where you are. Reception areas and the main camps usually have something usable, but game drives deeper into the reserve and the walking trails drop in and out. The sensible approach is to download the reserve map and save the camp's number to your phone, tell staff how long you expect to be out, and not rely on being able to make an emergency call from the middle of the park.

When does a Eswatini eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
