Gabon eSIM

Gabon is still almost entirely forested, and several of its national parks run right down to the coast, which is why forest elephants really do walk out onto the beach there. A typical trip means flying or taking the Trans-Gabon railway away from Libreville, then transferring by boat or vehicle into a park. Every one of those connections has to be arranged in advance and reconfirmed, because once you are in the forest you cannot fix anything online.

How much data you actually need

In town, plan on roughly 500MB–1.5GB a day for maps, WhatsApp and mobile wallets. If you upload wildlife photos or join calls, budget nearer 2GB a day and do the heavy work in Libreville rather than at a forest camp.

When you land

Léon-Mba in Libreville (LBV) is the main gateway, with Port-Gentil (POG) and Franceville Mvengue (MVB) for onward domestic legs. The other route people genuinely use is the Trans-Gabon railway from Owendo, on the edge of Libreville, up to Franceville, running overnight through the forest and stopping at Lopé. By sea there is the port of Owendo and boats to Port-Gentil. Get the line attached before leaving the terminal.

Where coverage changes

Libreville, Port-Gentil and Franceville work normally, and towns such as Lambaréné and Oyem have service in the built-up area. It thins right down along the railway where the line runs through forest, and there is effectively nothing in Loango, in Ivindo around the Kongou falls, in Minkébé in the north, or around Lopé once you leave the station area. Download maps and your booking confirmations before you head out of the city.

Cities travellers ask about

  • LibrevilleSeaside capital and the base where every park trip is put together.
  • Port-GentilOil-industry city on an island, reachable only by air or boat.
  • LambarénéRiver town on the Ogooué, home to the historic Schweitzer hospital.
  • Lopé National ParkWhere forest meets savanna, with a Trans-Gabon railway stop nearby.
  • Loango National ParkForest and lagoon meeting the beach, where wildlife reaches the shore; plan offline.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp for camps, guides and local drivers
  • Airtel Money or Moov Money for everyday payments
  • Google Maps with the country downloaded for offline use

FAQ

What is the Trans-Gabon railway like?+

It is a long-distance train from Owendo near Libreville up to Franceville, running overnight and passing through forest for most of the way. Departures and arrivals can slip by several hours, so do not book a tight onward connection. Signal drops out for long stretches, so download what you need before boarding, start with a full battery, and warn whoever is meeting you that you may be unreachable all night.

Do I need to book Loango in advance?+

Yes, well in advance. There are few beds inside the park and getting in means a chain of small flights or vehicle-and-boat transfers that are arranged only for guests who already hold a booking. Confirm every leg while you are still in Libreville, save the confirmations and contact numbers to your phone, and tell people at home you will next be reachable when you come back out of the park.

What language and payment methods work in Gabon?+

French is official and works everywhere; English turns up only at larger hotels and camps used to international guests. Payment is in Central African CFA francs. Hotels and bigger shops in Libreville take cards, but upcountry you should carry cash and set up a mobile wallet on your first day, since small shops and drivers are much more used to being paid that way.

When does a Gabon eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
