Mozambique
- Hotspot
Mozambique has an enormous coastline and destinations spread from Maputo in the south to the Quirimbas islands in the far north, so moving between them usually means a domestic flight or a bus that eats a whole day. The sea is the other reason to stay reachable: boats out to the Bazaruto islands and dive trips from Tofo depend on wind and current, and departure times are frequently rearranged by message on the morning itself.

A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

Estimate about 700MB–1.5GB a day for maps, chatting with operators and payment confirmations. If you upload underwater video from Tofo every evening, budget nearer 2GB a day.
The main gateway is Maputo International (MPM) in the south, with Beira (BEW), Nampula (APL) and Pemba (POL) — the way into the Quirimbas — serving the centre and north. Smaller fields at Vilankulo (VNX) and Inhambane (INH) handle traffic for Bazaruto and Tofo. Overland, the key posts are Ressano Garcia from South Africa, Namaacha from Eswatini, and Zóbuè in the west towards Malawi.
Coverage is good in Maputo, Matola, Beira, Nampula and Pemba, and in the coastal towns travellers use such as Vilankulo and Tofo. It thins on the Bazaruto and Quirimbas islands once you move away from the resorts, on the long provincial stretches of the EN1 highway, and across rural Zambezia and Niassa. Download what you need before boarding a boat or a long-distance bus.

Some, but not everywhere. A few island lodges have service around the buildings, while the crossing itself and the outer beaches usually have none. Treat an island day as an offline day: check messages before you board at Vilankulo, agree the pickup time with the skipper out loud rather than by text you may not receive, and save the landing point as a pin, because boats sometimes shift where they beach depending on the tide.
Long-distance buses on the EN1 run for many hours and sometimes overnight, with stretches where the signal weakens or drops. Charge fully and carry a power bank, download maps, music and your booking documents to the device, and write down the name and coordinates of your accommodation in case you need to show a taxi driver in the middle of the night. Tell the guesthouse in advance which departure you are on so a late arrival is expected.
The official language is Portuguese. In tourist areas such as Tofo and Vilankulo, people working with visitors speak reasonable English, but step outside those pockets and it is Portuguese or a local language. Download the offline Portuguese pack before you arrive and keep a note on your phone with the phrases you use most — prices, directions, the name of your accommodation — so you are not stuck when the signal is not there to translate on demand.
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
