The single gateway is Nauru International (INU) in Yaren district, right beside the ring road and only a few minutes from most accommodation. Flights are operated by Nauru Airlines, connecting Brisbane, Nadi, Tarawa, Majuro and other Pacific points on a schedule that runs only a few days a week. Check visa requirements with the official authorities well before you travel, since many nationalities have to apply in advance.
Where coverage changes
Because the island is so small, what service exists follows the inhabited coastal ring — Yaren, Aiwo, Denigomodu and around Anibare Bay. The interior plateau known as Topside, the old phosphate workings with their limestone pinnacles, has few residents and you should allow for patches with nothing at all. Do you have a plan that covers Nauru?+
Not at present. Nauru is not in our plan list, so please do not plan around buying one from us to use on the island. The workable route is to ask your own mobile provider about roaming, ask your accommodation about Wi-Fi at the time you book, and keep documents and maps available offline. For the legs through Brisbane or Nadi, plans for those destinations work as normal.
How much slack should I leave around flights to and from Nauru?+
Leave plenty. Flights operate only a few days a week, so if the one you booked moves or fills up, the next opportunity can be several days later. Book accommodation you can change, reconfirm the schedule with the airline close to departure, and keep your booking reference and the airline's contact details readable on the phone without a connection, in case you have to sort something out at the terminal.
What should I prepare for a short stay on the island?+
Bring Australian dollars in cash, which is the currency used on the island, because plenty of shops and services do not take cards. Ask your accommodation in advance about the airport pickup and about meals, since there are few places to eat and they close early. Download the whole island as an offline map, which takes almost no space. Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
