How much data you actually need
Most visitors use around 400MB–1GB a day on messaging, maps and photos from the beaches. Nightly video calls home or longer clips uploaded from the coast push that past 1.5GB a day.
When you land
Lungi International (FNA) is the only international airport, and it sits on the far side of the estuary from Freetown. The usual link is a fast ferry across the water of roughly half an hour, or a road route right around the bay that takes several hours. Others arrive overland from Guinea in the north or from Liberia in the south through the Jendema crossing. Turn the line on at Lungi, because you will need to confirm your boat slot and tell whoever is meeting you which jetty you will land at.
Where coverage changes
Service is strongest in Freetown, along the western peninsula where the beaches run from Lumley down to Tokeh, and in the larger upcountry towns of Bo, Kenema and Makeni. Between them the road has long quiet stretches, and it thins badly around Tiwai Island in the Moa River, in Outamba-Kilimi National Park, on the climb into the Loma Mountains towards Bintumani, and out on the Banana Islands and the southern coastal villages. How should I plan the trip from Lungi airport into Freetown?+
Book the ferry in advance and check that the last crossing of the day still works with your landing time, because if you miss it your options are the multi-hour road route around the bay or a night on the Lungi side. Get the line working inside the terminal so you can confirm the boat and tell whoever is meeting you which jetty and what time. Screenshot the booking and keep it on the device, since the signal can drop while you are out on the water.
Will data hold up once I head upcountry?+
In Bo, Kenema and Makeni it behaves normally, but on the roads between them and inside forest areas like Tiwai or Gola you can be out of range for stretches of half an hour or more. Download the map area, save your driver's and lodge's numbers to the device, and agree meeting points and times before you set off. Do not build a plan that assumes you can call or share your live location the whole way.
Do I need cash, or can I pay from my phone?+
Plan around cash, especially outside Freetown: small shops, drivers and boat owners mostly want notes. Mobile money on the local networks is used widely by residents, but signing up normally needs a domestic number and identity documents, so short-stay visitors rarely find it practical. Cards are accepted only at some hotels and larger establishments, so draw enough before you leave the capital for an upcountry leg.
