Validity starts on first connection at the destination
Suriname has only a handful of paved routes along the coastal strip, and everything inland is rainforest reached by light aircraft or by long boat up the rivers. That splits a normal trip into two halves: days in Paramaribo where everything works online as usual, and days in the interior where you must have arranged the pickup, the boat and the lodge in advance, because you may be unreachable for the better part of a week. Bookings and changes are still handled mostly over WhatsApp rather than on booking sites.

In Paramaribo most people use around 500MB to 1.5GB a day for maps, messaging and looking things up. Interior days barely register because there is nothing to connect to, so size the plan around the number of nights you actually spend on the coast rather than the length of the trip.
The main airport is Johan Adolf Pengel (PBM) at Zanderij, about 45 km from Paramaribo, while domestic flights into the interior leave from Zorg en Hoop (ORG) inside the city. Overland arrivals come by ferry from Guyana at South Drain and across the Marowijne river from French Guiana between Albina and Saint-Laurent. Switch your line on at PBM: the run into town is long and the car is usually arranged in advance by message.
Service is reliable along the coastal belt and the east–west road that links Nieuw Nickerie in the west to Albina in the east, and across Paramaribo itself. Turn south and it disappears over large areas: the Upper Suriname river, the Sipaliwini district, Brownsberg Nature Park and the Maroon villages along the rivers have no mobile network at all, and many lodges run a satellite link for a short window each day.

Mostly you cannot. The southern half of the country has no mobile coverage, some lodges open a satellite link for a couple of hours a day, and others have nothing. The sensible approach is to give people at home a clear itinerary before you leave, tell them the date you expect to be back on the coast, and agree when you will next make contact, so nobody panics during the days you are silent.
Check carefully, because each of them counts as a separate destination and a plan bought for Suriname does not automatically follow you across the river. If you intend to spend several days on the other side, look at which destinations a plan covers before you buy. For a same-day hop, many travellers simply finish anything online before boarding the boat and pick it back up on the Suriname side.
Count only the days on the coast, because interior days consume almost nothing. Six days in and around Paramaribo at roughly 1GB each is about 6GB, plus a little headroom for travel days when the map stays open for hours. If you upload video or join calls from your hotel in the city, doubling that figure is the safer starting point.
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
