Tajikistan eSIM

Tajikistan is one of those countries where map distances lie, because almost everything is slow mountain road and a short line can take a full day. The trip most people come for, the Pamir Highway, puts you above four thousand metres and a day's drive from the nearest town, so preparing what is on your phone matters as much as preparing water and fuel.

Before you buy for Tajikistan

Every Tajikistan eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.

What happens when your GB runs out

A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

How to check your data and top up

How much data you actually need

Around 400MB–1GB a day for a normal trip, because you barely use anything while you are up on the Pamirs. Most of it goes the moment you reach Dushanbe or Khujand again and a backlog of photos uploads at once.

When you land

Dushanbe (DYU) and Khujand (LBD) in the north are the main gateways, with Kulob (TJU) and Bokhtar (KQT) taking limited flights. Overland the common crossings are Oybek from Tashkent, Kyzyl-Art on the Pamir Highway from Osh, and Panji Poyon towards Afghanistan. Bring the line up and check your paperwork while still in a town, because several mountain posts sit outside coverage.

Where coverage changes

Dushanbe, Khujand and the Sughd region in the north have workable city-wide signal, and Khorog, the main town of the Badakhshan region, is usually usable. Beyond that it is very thin: the Wakhan valley, Bulunkul, the plateau around Murghab, the Ak-Baital pass and the road along the Panj river should all be planned as days without contact.

Cities travellers ask about

  • Dushanbe — Works city-wide; where you prepare before the Pamirs.
  • Khujand — Well covered northern city, close to the Uzbek border.
  • Khorog — The main Pamir stop where you can still get word out.
  • Panjakent — Gateway to the Seven Lakes; signal ends outside town.
  • Murghab — High plateau village; treat the whole stay as offline.

Apps to install before you fly

  • Organic Maps or Maps.me with the whole country downloaded first
  • 2GIS for finding addresses and shops in Dushanbe and Khujand
  • Google Translate with the Russian pack downloaded for offline use
  • Telegram for reaching drivers and homestays when you are back in signal

FAQ

Do I need a GBAO permit for the Pamirs?+

Yes. Badakhshan is a special administrative region that needs a permit separate from your visa, and the checkpoints along the route genuinely ask for it. Many travellers request it together with the visa before departure; applying later means a stop in Dushanbe and extra days. Keep both a file and a paper copy, because most checkpoints sit where you cannot open your email.

Can I drive the Pamir Highway myself?+

People do it, but it needs more preparation than a normal road trip: long unpaved sections, fuel stops far apart and workshops only in the bigger towns. Most travellers hire a vehicle with a driver who knows the route and where spare fuel is sold. Save the rental company's and your guesthouses' contact details offline before you leave Dushanbe or Osh.

How much should I worry about altitude?+

Take it seriously: the route lifts you from low-lying Dushanbe to a plateau over four thousand metres within a few days. Most travellers ascend gradually and spend a night in Khorog first. Build an acclimatisation day into the schedule, tell the people you are travelling with if something feels wrong, and do not count on phoning for help, because the highest sections have no signal at all.

When does a Tajikistan eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
