How much data you actually need
Around 1–2GB a day covers maps, booking boda rides, messaging lodges and looking things up on the road. Add roughly another gigabyte a day if you are also working remotely from Kampala.
When you land
Entebbe International (EBB) is the only gateway for international flights, sitting on the shore of Lake Victoria about an hour from Kampala when traffic behaves. Overland crossings are Malaba and Busia for Kenya, Katuna for Rwanda and Elegu for South Sudan. Switch the line on at landing so you can confirm your pickup before walking out of the terminal.
Where coverage changes
Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja and the towns along the main highways are well covered. It thins in the south-west around Bwindi and Mgahinga, where valleys and tall forest block the signal for long stretches. Murchison Falls has coverage near the lodges and the boat launch but not across the park, and Kidepo Valley in the far north is genuinely remote, so finish anything that needs a connection before you leave the last town.

FAQ
Do I need data on site once the gorilla permit is booked?+
Not if you prepare properly, because the meeting points sit in areas where signal is unreliable. Save the confirmation, the name of the briefing point and the operator's phone number to your device while you are still in town. Data earns its keep earlier in the chain: confirming what time the vehicle collects you, checking which gate you are entering through, and warning the lodge when the road turns out slower than planned.
Is booking a boda in an app better than flagging one down?+
The advantages of the app are a recorded trip, a price agreed before you get on, and the ability to share your live location with the people you are travelling with, which takes the roadside negotiation out of the equation. The trade-off is that you need data to book and to follow the route. Always use the helmet the rider offers, and if you have luggage or the rain sets in, book a car instead.
Can I keep using the same plan when I cross into Rwanda?+
It depends on what the plan lists as its coverage area. A plan bought for Uganda alone stops working the moment you cross at Katuna into Rwanda. If the itinerary takes in both countries, choose a regional plan that names them both from the start, so you are not standing at the post reconfiguring a phone. Save maps for both sides beforehand too — a border queue is a poor place to install anything new.
When does a Uganda eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
