Vietnam eSIM for a 7-day, two-city trip with an internal flight
Seven days fits three nights in Hanoi, a domestic flight, then four in Da Nang and Hoi An. The data has to carry on across both cities without swapping SIMs.
Two cities in seven days comes to about 8 GB at normal use (light 4, heavy 15). The 7-day 1 GB pack only suits Wi-Fi-heavy travellers; for normal use look at the 10 GB 30-day plan or a daily plan at 1-2 GB.
The Vietnam-specific catch: the internal flight day is the day you use data most, with check-in, Grab at two airports and flight-status checks. Make sure the plan carries through without hitting a daily cap.

Seven days, two cities: the rhythm of the trip
Seven days differs from five in having one seam. A common pattern is three nights in Hanoi eating and wandering the Old Quarter, a day out to Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay, then a domestic flight to Da Nang and four nights around Hoi An, or the reverse, depending on your inbound and outbound flights.
The advantage is that one Vietnam plan covers both cities. Our Vietnam plans work in the north and the centre alike, with nothing to reinstall in between.
Where data spikes and falls over seven days
Internal flight day: checking out, Grab to Noi Bai, flight status, then Grab again in Da Nang and the map to find the hotel. It is the heaviest mobile-data day.
Ha Long or Ninh Binh day: hours by road or boat, and signal in the bay can come and go, so do not plan live work or big downloads on the boat.
Three Hanoi nights: plenty of hotel and restaurant Wi-Fi, so mobile data is for maps in the narrow Old Quarter lanes and Grab.
Four nights in Da Nang and Hoi An: lots of video of the lantern streets and My Khe beach, which is cheaper to upload later on hotel Wi-Fi.
Which plan shape fits seven days
Seven days matches the 7-day fixed Vietnam validity exactly, but that pack is only 500 MB or 1 GB, while the normal figure for seven days is 8 GB. So the 7-day pack suits relaxed travellers who use hotel and café Wi-Fi almost entirely; if you know you call Grab daily and post on the move, skip it.
For 8 GB, the 10 GB plan valid for 30 days is the nearest fixed option. You use seven days and leave the rest of the validity unused, but one pack covers both cities with no daily cut-off. If you use data heavily and expect about 15 GB, look at the 20 GB plan. The alternative is a daily plan at 1 GB or 2 GB, paying for the days you travel, but you cannot make just the flight day bigger, since one size applies to the whole trip, so size it for your heavy day.
Daily plans win over fixed ones on short trips with steady usage. At seven days the gap narrows. If the flight day is heavy enough to pass the allowance, speed drops until the next day, whereas a large fixed pack has no daily line to hit.
Connectivity facts for the north-to-centre route
Grab works in both Hanoi and Da Nang, but drivers and hosts in smaller places such as Hoi An often find Zalo or Facebook Messenger easier. Have both installed and logged in beforehand. Google Maps is fine in towns, but download offline maps for the road to Ha Long and any mountain route.
Domestic airlines usually let you check in online and show the boarding pass in an app or email. Always keep a screenshot of the pass in case signal drops at the gate. The eSIM is data only with no SMS, so if an airline sends a code by SMS, use the Thai SIM to receive it.
Test the connection before the flight day: confirm the eSIM works in Hanoi rather than waiting to try it in Da Nang, since installation problems are easier to fix from your first hotel.
FAQ
Do I need to change eSIM between Hanoi and Da Nang?+
No. Vietnam plans work nationwide through the local networks, so you can leave it on for the whole trip. What deserves checking is signal on the plane and in mountain areas, not changing plans.
For seven days Hanoi to Da Nang, daily 1 GB or 2 GB?+
If you use hotel Wi-Fi in the evening and mobile data for maps and Grab, 1 GB a day is often enough. If the flight day and Ha Long day will involve shooting and uploading on the road, step up to 2 GB, since you cannot size individual days.
Will I have signal on a Ha Long Bay cruise?+
Near the pier there is usually signal, but deeper in the bay it can come and go depending on where the boat is and on the network. Do not rely on mobile data for important bookings or payments on board, and keep reservations as screenshots.
