How to choose an eSIM for China that actually works: a checklist before you pay

An eight-point checklist for buying a China eSIM: network, gateway, data size, validity start, support, refunds and device compatibility.

한눈에 보기

  • Check that the plan names its mainland network and uses a gateway outside the mainland, since that decides whether foreign apps usually open.
  • Pick data by trip length and usage, then check when validity starts, the hotspot policy and refund terms.
  • Confirm your phone supports eSIM, is not carrier-locked, and that support is reachable from inside China.

Start with the right question: will this plan really work in China

A China eSIM is not decided by data size alone. What matters is the network the plan attaches to, the route your data takes out of the country, and small conditions such as when validity starts or how you reach support. This is a buyer's checklist, not a ranking: go through it item by item before you pay.

If eSIM is new to you, read “What is an eSIM and how does it work?” first. For how foreign apps can open without extra setup, see “China eSIM Without a VPN: How It Works and What to Check Before Buying”.

How to choose an eSIM for China that actually works: a checklist before you pay

1. Which network the plan uses: China Unicom, China Mobile or China Telecom

Travel eSIM providers usually partner with one or more mainland operators. Check whether the product page names the network. A named network lets you confirm that it covers your cities and supports your phone's bands. The three operators are explained in “China Mobile, Unicom and Telecom for Travellers”.

2. Will foreign apps open: look for a gateway outside the mainland

Google, LINE, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Gmail are usually not reachable on mainland networks and hotel Wi-Fi. A travel eSIM from a non-Chinese provider usually routes data through a gateway outside the mainland, much like roaming, which is why those apps usually open. Nobody can guarantee every app on every network, so prefer a plan that explains this plainly and test on arrival.

Last checked October 2026. Network arrangements and app access can change, so confirm with the seller and the plan page before you travel.

3. Does it also cover Hong Kong and Macau

If you cross into Hong Kong or Macau, check whether the plan includes them. A mainland-only plan may not work after the border, so you may need a separate or multi-region plan. Hong Kong does not have the same app restrictions as the mainland; for TikTok see “How to use TikTok in China and Hong Kong when your eSIM will not open it”.

4. Choose data size by trip length and usage style

These are conservative estimates for maps, chat and social use, not continuous video. For per-app usage see “How much data does Google Maps actually use?” and “How much data do LINE and WhatsApp use?”.

여행 기간Light (maps, chat)Moderate (social, photos)Heavy (video, hotspot)

5. Daily plans, total-data plans and hotspot policy

  • Daily plan: a fixed allowance per day, usually throttled rather than cut when exceeded. Good for steady users; read what speed applies after the limit.
  • Total-data plan: spend it on any day within the validity. Better for trips with heavy days, such as downloading offline maps.
  • Hotspot: some plans allow tethering, some restrict it. If you will share data with a laptop or a travel partner, check this before buying.

6. When validity starts, support access and refund rules

  • Validity starts on install or on first connection: the second is safer if you install at home days ahead. With the first, days are used up before you fly.
  • Support reachable from China: do not rely on a chat app that may be blocked. Prefer email or web chat, and keep the order confirmation saved offline.
  • Refund rules: refunds usually apply only if the eSIM is not yet installed or no data was used. Read the seller's terms before paying.

7. Device compatibility and carrier lock

Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier. A locked phone will refuse an eSIM from another provider. Look in Settings for Carrier Lock or SIM Lock, and ask your carrier if unsure. Some phones sold in mainland China have no eSIM. Install steps are in “Install a China eSIM Before You Fly: Step by Step” and “How to install an eSIM, step by step (iPhone and Android)”.

Some apps in China, such as Didi or Meituan, may ask for an SMS code. Data-only eSIMs have no Chinese number, so keep your Thai SIM on for SMS and bank OTPs.

Red flags in a plan listing

  • No network or coverage named, only vague wording such as works everywhere
  • A promise that every app opens, which nobody can guarantee
  • No mention of the speed after the allowance runs out, or of the hotspot policy
  • The only contact route is chat inside an app that may not open in China

Here is the short version to run through before you pay.

  • The network and coverage area are stated
  • Gateway outside the mainland is explained, with no inflated promises
  • Data size matches the table above
  • You know when validity starts and have a support route that works in China
  • Phone is supported and not locked

자주 묻는 질문

How many days before the trip should I buy+

Buy and install at least a day or two before you fly, over home Wi-Fi, so you have time to fix problems if installation fails.

Can the eSIM make calls or receive SMS+

Most plans are data-only with no phone number. Keep your Thai SIM for calls and SMS; chat apps can call over data.

Is it safer to buy a lot of data+

If unsure, go one step above the table, but you do not need to overbuy. Downloading offline maps in advance saves data; see “Offline maps that actually work when the data runs out”.
