Which months are best for the aurora in Canada?

Winter gives the longest, darkest nights, while autumn is milder and still offers good chances. Each town's official tourism body recommends a slightly different window.

  • Yellowknife: Northwest Territories Tourism says the autumn aurora season runs from mid-August to the end of September, and the winter season from mid-November to early April.
  • Whitehorse: Travel Yukon says the season runs from mid-August to mid-April. Autumn (late August to October) is milder, and winter (November to March) has the darkest nights.
  • Churchill: Travel Manitoba names February to March as the best period.

Whichever town you choose, plan 3 or more nights, as Travel Yukon advises, to allow for cloudy nights.

How do you get to Yellowknife?

You first fly into a major Canadian city, then take a domestic flight to Yellowknife Airport (YZF). According to Northwest Territories Tourism, direct flights reach YZF from three hubs.

  1. 1Fly into CanadaMost Thai travellers enter through Vancouver (YVR) or Toronto (YYZ), holding a visitor visa or an eTA under IRCC rules.
  2. 2Connect to YZFAir Canada direct flights take about 2.5 hours from Vancouver, about 2 hours from Calgary and about 1.5 hours from Edmonton.
  3. 3Or head to ChurchillTravel Manitoba says Churchill is reached by Calm Air from Winnipeg in about 2 hours, or by VIA Rail from Winnipeg, departing Sundays and Tuesdays and taking about 48 hours.
Flight and train schedules change by season, so confirm with the airline and VIA Rail before booking. Last checked October 2026.

Where can you check the aurora forecast for Canada?

Canada's official source is the Canadian Space Weather Forecast Centre, run by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) at spaceweather.gc.ca, which gives regional conditions and short-range forecasts.

NRCan says the Canadian Space Weather Forecast Centre is running in a limited mode because of a cyber security vulnerability. Only basic products are available: the zonal review and forecast, current conditions, the 24-hour forecast and solar flux. Check the site again before you travel.
  • Check the 24-hour forecast for your zone each afternoon and compare it with a cloud forecast in a weather app, because you need clear skies to see anything.
  • Get away from town lights and watch between 10 pm and 3 am local time, the window Travel Yukon names as best.

Should you join an aurora tour or self-drive?

For a first winter trip, a tour is usually simpler: transport, a guide who knows the viewing spots and, in Yukon, operators who rent cold-weather gear. Self-driving gives more freedom but means dark roads, sub-zero temperatures and limited cell coverage outside towns.

장점

  • Tour: transport and a guide, no night driving on icy roads
  • Tour: cold-weather gear rental in Yukon
  • Self-drive: choose spots and timing by the forecast

단점

  • Tour: the operator sets times and spots
  • Self-drive: limited cell coverage outside towns, so download offline maps
  • Self-drive: you need snow-driving experience and an IDP

Will your phone and camera work in the cold?

Yes, if you keep them warm. Apple says iPhones are designed for 0–35 °C; cold can temporarily shorten battery life, shut the phone down or stop it charging, and the battery recovers once warm. Your phone does most of the work on an aurora trip: forecasts, tour pickups, navigation and sending photos home.

  • Keep the phone in an inside jacket pocket and carry a power bank close to your body.
  • Keep spare camera batteries in a pocket and swap them when the one in use gets cold.
  • Use a tripod and night mode or a manual long exposure.
  • Before going indoors, seal the camera in a bag to limit condensation on the lens.
  • Download offline maps before leaving town, because cell coverage in the north is limited outside towns.

In Yellowknife and Whitehorse, having data from the moment you land lets you check forecasts, get tour messages and book rides without relying on hotel Wi-Fi.
