From Vancouver to Banff, the simplest route is a flight from YVR to Calgary (YYC), then a shuttle to Banff, which Travel Alberta puts at 144 km from the airport. Use Parks Canada shuttles for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, and if you continue to Jasper on the Icefields Parkway, download offline maps first because there is no cell coverage.

How do you get from YVR to downtown Vancouver?

Take the Canada Line, which TransLink says runs from YVR to Waterfront station downtown in about 25 minutes.

  1. 1Follow the Canada Line signsThe station is inside the airport; follow the signs after baggage claim and customs.
  2. 2Tap to pay at the gateTransLink accepts contactless credit or debit cards, mobile wallets or a Compass Card; tap the same card or phone throughout the trip.
  3. 3Expect the YVR AddFareTrips leaving the airport carry a YVR AddFare; check the current amount on the TransLink website.

How many days for Vancouver, and what is there to see?

Give the city about 2 to 3 days before the mountains. Popular areas such as Stanley Park, Granville Island and Gastown are reachable on TransLink transit without a car. For a day out, the Sea-to-Sky Highway (Hwy 99) to Whistler is a popular drive; check the distance and road conditions before you go. In winter, British Columbia requires winter tires or chains on most signed routes from October 1 to April 30.

How do you get from Vancouver to Banff?

Most travellers fly to Calgary and take a shuttle, because it is quicker and avoids a long mountain drive. Driving from Vancouver suits people who want stops along the way and have more days.

Do you need a shuttle for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake?

For Moraine Lake, yes: Parks Canada says Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. Lake Louise has paid lakeshore parking with no RVs allowed, and Parks Canada says about 75% of vehicles were turned away last summer because it was full.

  • 2026 season: the Lake Louise shuttle ran May 15–October 12, and the Moraine Lake, Lake Connector and Alpine Start shuttles ran June 1–October 12.
  • Booking: in 2026 reservations opened April 15 at 8 am MDT, with 40% of seats released then and 60% released two days before departure.
  • Park and Ride: at the Lake Louise Ski Resort (1 Whitehorn Road).
Parks Canada announces shuttle and booking dates every year. Expect similar timing in 2027, but confirm on the Parks Canada website. Last checked October 2026.

Do you need a Parks Canada pass in Banff?

Yes, if you stop anywhere in the national park. Parks Canada says a pass is also needed on the Icefields Parkway (Hwy 93N) and the Bow Valley Parkway (1A) even without stopping, while driving straight through on the Trans-Canada Highway needs none. A daily pass is valid until 4 pm the next day; check the current fee on the Parks Canada website.

Parks Canada also asks you to stay 30 m from deer, elk, sheep and moose and 100 m from bears, wolves, cougars and coyotes. Feeding wildlife is illegal; at a roadside sighting, stay in the vehicle and keep moving.

Can you drive the Icefields Parkway to Jasper, and how is Jasper after the wildfire?

Yes, with preparation. Parks Canada says the Icefields Parkway is a 232 km remote road from Lake Louise to Jasper with limited services, summer-only fuel at Saskatchewan River Crossing and no cell coverage. Its recovery page after the 2024 wildfire says virtually all of Jasper's trails have reopened, but Cavell Road and Maligne Canyon stay closed for the 2026 season. Wabasso, Whirlpool Group and part of Wapiti campgrounds are closed, and 77% of frontcountry campsites are available.

Jasper's openings and closures change often; check the Parks Canada recovery page before you go. Last checked October 2026.

Where does your phone lose signal in the Rockies, and how should you prepare?

The main gap is the Icefields Parkway, which Parks Canada says has no cell coverage. Have data from the moment you land at YVR for transit, shuttle tickets and maps, then prepare before you leave town.

  • Download offline maps for Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper before setting off.
  • Save Parks Canada shuttle bookings and your park pass on the phone in case there is no signal at the stop.
  • Apple says iPhones are designed for 0–35 °C; cold can shut the phone down or stop it charging, so keep it inside your jacket.
  • Use a VoLTE phone, because Bell shuts down 3G nationally on March 1, 2027.
