What Beijing is like on a phone

Beijing operates at a scale most visitors do not pack for: avenues many lanes wide, and ten minutes of walking from one corner of a block to the other. People come for the palaces and the wall, for meetings, or to see family. One thing to understand before you land: a travel eSIM roams onto a local network here, and some overseas apps and websites may simply not be reachable unless you have made your own arrangements beforehand. Plan how you will message people and read maps accordingly.

Most flights land at Beijing Capital (PEK) or Daxing (PKX), which sit on opposite sides of the city and take very different times to reach the centre. Turn the eSIM on in the cabin so the network registration is finished before you reach immigration. Both airports have an express rail link and a taxi queue. On the train in the connection works inside the tunnels, but save your hotel address in Chinese on the device first, so you can simply hold up the screen for a driver.

Inside the city it is thorough, and the subway works both on the platforms and in the trains. The old single-storey lanes, the hutongs, are generally fine. What you notice more is congestion slowing things where crowds are thickest, such as the palace forecourts in high season. Head beyond the outer ring roads towards the northern mountains and the line goes patchy with the valleys, thinning along the sections of wall that sit furthest from the access road.

A walking day here runs about 1–1.5GB, because the distances keep the map open and most people call a car at some point. Camera translation of menus and signs eats more, and more steadily, than people expect. If you plan to call home every evening, allow extra and test your method on the first night rather than the night you need it, since some overseas channels may not work unless you arranged something in advance.

Districts travellers ask about

• Dongcheng and the hutongs — The old core around the palace, with lanes of single-storey courtyards that look alike enough to lose yourself in; coverage is generally fine, so drop a pin at the lane mouth before walking in.
• Chaoyang — The business and embassy district of towers and international hotels; strong and suited to online meetings, with the deep basements of the larger malls answering more slowly in the evening.
• Haidian — Universities and technology firms in the northwest, spread out around large historic gardens; under the thickest tree cover in those gardens the line softens a little but stays usable.
• Qianmen and Xicheng — Old pedestrian streets and the inner-city lakes, packed on evenings and holidays when speeds sag at peak; save any entry tickets to the device before you join the queue.

Day trips out of the city

• The wall at Mutianyu — About ninety minutes north; the mountain road and the ridge itself have weak stretches, especially at the towers furthest from the entrance. Agree a specific meeting point with your driver in advance rather than relying on phoning around when you come down.
• Gubei water town and the wall above it — Further northeast, usually with a night's stay; the water town itself is well served while the trail up to the wall above has gaps. Opening times and whether the wall can be walked at night change with the season, so take them from the official notice.
• The Ming tombs — A scatter of tombs across a valley north of the city, with country-road drives between them; the main roads are served while the pine groves around the tombs thin out. Download the area map before leaving town.
