Day trips out of the city

• The peninsula loop to Cape Point — The drive takes in Chapman's Peak, the penguin beach at Boulders and the tip itself. Service fades in the sections where the road runs beneath cliffs, and thins out inside the reserve near the point. Entry rules and fees for the reserve change from year to year, so check the official site before you set off rather than relying on what a blog said.
• The Winelands: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek — Both towns themselves are comfortable, but the lanes between estates climb over rises and drop into valleys, so service comes and goes. • Hermanus and the whale coast — This is where the long coastal run towards the Garden Route begins. The town and its clifftop path are usable; the coast road out here has long quiet stretches.
