Best eSIM for New Zealand in 2026: which brand, and 7, 14 or 30 days
A comparison of New Zealand eSIM options by plan model, network and trip length, with a note on where signal drops out on South Island roads.

Коротко
- For a 7 day city trip to Auckland or Wellington, a fixed GB plan is usually enough, while a cross-island drive calls for a plan you can top up or one with data to spare.
- New Zealand eSIMs of every brand run on local networks (One NZ, Spark, 2degrees), so the real differences are plan model, refund policy and top-up rules.
- For stays of 30 days or more, such as a working holiday, a local SIM with a phone number may suit better than a data-only eSIM.
This guide is based on the plans, policies and help pages each brand publishes as of October 2026, not on a test trip. This site also sells eSIMs, so it appears as one option in the comparison and is not ranked.

Which networks a New Zealand eSIM uses
New Zealand has three mobile operators: One NZ, Spark and 2degrees. Depending on the plan, an eSIM brand connects to one of them or to several. Before buying, open the plan page and look for the line that names the network. If it is missing, ask support.
Our New Zealand plans use Spark and One NZ, as each plan page states. New Zealand's networks switched off 3G between December 2025 and March 2026 according to the national telecom industry body (not yet checked against an official page), so check that your phone supports 4G or VoLTE before you go.
Where coverage runs thin
Cities and main highways are rarely a problem. Side roads on the South Island, mountain passes, national parks and remote coastlines often have dead stretches. That comes from the networks themselves, so switching eSIM brand will not fix it. Each operator publishes a coverage map on its own website, and it is worth checking the routes you will actually drive.
- Download offline maps for the whole route on Wi-Fi before leaving town.
- Save accommodation addresses, fuel stops and emergency numbers on the phone.
- Keep mobile data switched on so the phone reconnects by itself when coverage returns.

Road trips and campervans
A driving trip uses more data than people expect: navigation, searching for rest stops, booking campsites and uploading photos all add up. If several people share one plan, check on the plan page whether hotspot is allowed, because brands differ on this.
For navigation, see the guide on using data for driving abroad, and for maps see the offline maps guide. A fixed GB plan that can be topped up is safer than one that cannot, because if the data runs out midway you will not need to buy a new eSIM.
Options compared by plan model
| Вариант | Plan model | Проверьте перед покупкой |
|---|---|---|
| Airalo | Prepaid data packages by country, mostly with no phone number | Validity start, top-up availability and refund conditions |
| Holafly | Day-based unlimited plans, no phone number | Hotspot limit and fair-use terms; top-ups are no longer offered |
| Nomad | Fixed GB, unlimited and Day Plans | Unlimited plans are non-refundable; add-ons start when the original plan expires |
| Saily | App-based GB plans with top-ups | App has no Thai and prices are in US dollars |
| esimonline (this site) | Plans in THB, QR by email, no app, no phone number | The plan page names the networks; self-service refund within 14 days if not installed |
Travelling as a pair and using data separately, one eSIM each is more flexible than sharing a hotspot from a single phone, whose battery drains faster and which must stay within reach.

7, 14 or 30 days: how to choose
- 7 days: one or two main cities, mostly maps and chat. A small or medium fixed GB plan is usually enough.
- 14 days: a drive across islands or several towns, with higher daily use. Pick a larger size or a plan you can top up.
- 30 days: confirm the validity really covers all 30 days, and check whether the brand limits continuous use in one country.
Unlimited feels comfortable, but several brands slow the speed once a daily threshold is passed, and the threshold differs by brand. Read the terms first, and compare the current price of each model for your exact travel dates.
Longer stays and working holidays
Most tourist eSIMs are data-only and have no local number. If you need to apply for jobs, open a bank account or take calls from an employer, a local SIM with a number fits better, and the working holiday guide covers that. Keep your Thai SIM active for bank OTP text messages.

Вопросы и ответы
Does a New Zealand eSIM work on every phone?+
No. The phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier locked, so check before buying.
How far ahead can I buy?+
It depends on the brand. Some require activation within 60 days and others allow longer, so read the terms of the plan you buy.
Can an eSIM make calls or receive texts?+
Most plans are data-only with no number. Use internet calling apps and keep your Thai SIM for OTP.
Will there be signal in national parks?+
Many areas have none, whichever eSIM brand you use. Download offline maps before you go in.
