How many seasons does New Zealand have, and which months are they?

New Zealand has four seasons under the standard national definitions: summer from December to February, autumn from March to May, winter from June to August and spring from September to November. So when Thailand is at its hottest in April, New Zealand is in autumn, and the Thai New Year period over late December falls in New Zealand's mid-summer.

Earth Sciences New Zealand, formed when NIWA merged with GNS Science on 1 July 2025, says in its 2025 Annual Climate Summary that 2025 was New Zealand's fourth-warmest year on record, with a national mean temperature of 13.51 C. New Plymouth in Taranaki was the sunniest place, with 2,743 hours of sunshine. The Department of Conservation (DOC) warns that weather in alpine and fiord areas can change quickly, so check the MetService forecast each day before you set out.

When is peak season in New Zealand, and when is it quieter?

Summer, from December to February, is the busiest period, because it combines the Christmas break with New Zealand's long summer school holidays, which usually run from mid-December to late January or early February. Immigration New Zealand advises applying for your visa early, especially if you plan to travel between September and March, its peak season for applications.

Many Thai travellers find autumn (March to May) and early spring good value, but check the local calendar too. New Zealand schools also take shorter breaks in April, July and from late September to early October, when locals travel and ski fields get busy. Check the exact term dates on the New Zealand Ministry of Education website.

When is Great Walks season, and when do Milford Track bookings open?

DOC says the 2026/27 Milford Track Great Walk season runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, with the last departure on 28 April 2027. The track is walked one way only, from Glade Wharf to Sandfly Point, over 4 days and 3 nights. You must stay in each booked hut on the booked night, and camping is not allowed. Outside the season the track has high avalanche risk, with more than 57 avalanche paths.

  1. 1Pick a track and monthGreat Walk seasons fall in the southern-hemisphere warm months. The Milford Track runs November to April, and the Routeburn Track has more than 32 avalanche paths in winter.
  2. 2Note the booking dayFor 2026/27, bookings opened at 9:30am NZT on staggered days, including Milford on 13 May, Routeburn on 15 May and Kepler on 19 May 2026. Milford and Routeburn sell out fast.
  3. 3Book transport to the track endsOn the Milford Track you must book boat or road transport to each end, since there is no private vehicle access. International visitors pay a higher hut rate than New Zealand residents; check the current rate on the DOC website.
Season and booking dates change every year. Confirm them on the DOC website before you plan. Last checked October 2026.

Which New Zealand public holidays affect your trip?

Around public holidays more locals travel, accommodation and rental cars fill up, and some shops change their hours. Employment New Zealand lists the main dates below, including Matariki, the Māori New Year holiday, which fell on Friday 10 July in 2026.

What should you pack for each New Zealand season?

Pack layers in every season, because a single day can bring sun, wind and rain, especially in the alpine and fiord areas where DOC says the weather changes quickly.

  • A waterproof, windproof jacket and a light warm layer for every season; add a heavy coat, gloves and a hat for winter, June to August.
  • Insect repellent with DEET for Fiordland and the West Coast; DOC says sandflies are worst in summer and advises covering up.
  • Clean hiking boots, because New Zealand Customs requires you to declare used shoes and outdoor gear on arrival.
  • An adaptor for the angled flat-pin AS/NZS 3112 sockets, plus a power bank for long days away from towns.

Why does your mobile connection matter when you travel by season?

Because New Zealand trips depend on day-to-day weather and road conditions, you need data to check MetService, read road-closure notices and show bookings on your phone. All 3G networks have now closed; the Telecommunications Forum confirmed this on 2 April 2026, so your phone must support 4G with VoLTE.

One NZ's VoLTE FAQ says VoLTE is not supported while roaming in New Zealand, so a visitor roaming on a Thai SIM may be unable to make or receive normal calls in 4G-only areas. A local SIM or eSIM on a VoLTE-capable phone is safer. DOC says there is no cellphone coverage on the Milford Track, so download offline maps before you go.

Network and roaming terms can change; check with your provider before you travel. Last checked October 2026.
