Double charges, pending items and refunds abroad: how long, and what to do

Коротко

  • A pending item abroad is often an authorisation hold or an item the merchant has not yet settled, not necessarily a double charge. Holds that are never settled usually drop off on their own within the time your bank sets. But if two settled (posted) items appear for the same purchase, contact the merchant and your bank.
  • How long a refund from abroad takes depends on the merchant, its bank, the card network and your own bank, so there is no fixed number. Ask the merchant when it was issued and your bank when it should show.

What a pending transaction abroad means

When you pay by credit card abroad, the merchant usually asks for authorisation first. Your bank holds that amount against the card's limit. In the banking app it may show as pending or awaiting approval. It is not yet a real charge until the merchant submits it for settlement.

Banks label pending items differently and set different times for them to drop off. Check your own bank's terms or ask the bank.

A double charge on a foreign card, or just two holds

СитуацияЧто это обычно означаетЧто делать дальше
Two pending items, same amount, same merchantMay be repeat authorisations, such as a retry after a failed swipe; one often drops off on its ownWait for your bank's timeframe and keep the receipt
Two posted items for the same purchasePossibly a real duplicate chargeContact the merchant first, then your bank if unresolved
A pending item that lingersMay be a hold the merchant has not released, such as a hotel or car rentalAsk the merchant to release it and your bank how long it takes
Two items from one merchant with different amountsPossibly the real charge and a hold, or conversion at different timesCompare with the receipt, currency and dates
The principle: pending is not always a real charge, so do not panic at once. But if posted items are duplicated, start by making contact.

How a pending item goes away

A pending item abroad usually goes one of two ways. Either the merchant settles it and it turns from pending to posted, possibly with a slightly different amount because of currency conversion or a tip, or the merchant never settles it and the hold is released after the period your bank sets.

  • How long a hold takes to clear differs by bank, so ask your own bank.
  • With merchants that settle late, like hotels, the final charge may arrive after check-out.
  • Keep screenshots and receipts until the item clears or is confirmed.

Hotel refunds abroad and deposits

Hotels abroad often place a hold on your card as a deposit or incidentals guarantee at check-in and release it after check-out. Releasing a hold can take as long as the hotel's and your bank's processes require. If you were charged and a refund is issued, the money returns through the card network, and the time varies case by case.

  1. 1Ask for a check-out receipt showing the final amountUse it to compare against the lines on your statement.
  2. 2Ask the hotel when it released the hold or issued the refund, and get a reference numberA reference number makes it easier for your bank to trace.
  3. 3Watch your banking app for the period your bank statesIf it goes past that period, contact the bank with your evidence.

Card refunds from abroad and how many days they take

Questions like how many days a foreign card refund takes, or how long a refund of a foreign card payment takes, have no single correct number. The total depends on several steps: the merchant approves it, submits the refund through its bank, the network processes it, and your bank posts it. What you can do is ask the merchant on which day the refund was issued, and ask your bank how long foreign refunds normally take to show.

  • Keep the merchant's proof of refund, such as a confirmation email or refund slip.
  • The refund may appear as a credit on your next statement, depending on the billing cycle.
  • If the time the merchant and bank gave has passed and you still see nothing, contact the bank with your evidence.

Why a refund can differ from the amount you paid

The payment and the refund are converted at different times, so the rates can differ and the baht refunded may not equal the baht you paid, higher or lower. Some conversion fees may also not be refunded, depending on your issuing bank's terms. Read your bank's terms, and when checking whether you got the full refund, compare the foreign-currency amount rather than the baht amount.

If you are double charged or not refunded: how to raise it with your bank

  1. 1Contact the merchant firstAsk for the duplicate to be cancelled or a refund issued, and get it in writing.
  2. 2Gather evidenceReceipts, screenshots of the items, dates, currency and emails with the merchant.
  3. 3Tell your issuing bankUse the bank's official channel, such as the call centre or app, and ask about disputing the item or a chargeback.
  4. 4Ask about timeframes and keep the reference numberBanks set different deadlines for reporting and investigating, so ask directly and report promptly.
If you see a transaction you did not make at all, not merely a duplicate, tell your bank at once to block the card and investigate. See the lost, stolen or skimmed card guide.

Preventing double-charge and refund headaches while travelling

  • If a swipe fails or the terminal hangs, ask whether the first attempt was cancelled before you try again.
  • Keep receipts and photos until items post and the amounts match.
  • Switch on transaction alerts in your banking app so you see items straight away.
  • Before you leave, check your bank's terms for foreign card use. See the guide on setting up your card before travelling.

If you are travelling: staying online, briefly

Tracking pending items, receiving bank verification codes and contacting your bank during a trip all need a connection. A data-only eSIM is one option; check the live price and plan details on the day you buy. For SMS one-time codes, see the SMS and OTP guide.

Частые вопросы

Вопросы и ответы

What is a pending transaction on a foreign card payment?+

It is an item your bank holds after the merchant asks for authorisation, but the merchant has not yet settled. It may turn into posted or drop off on its own within the time your bank sets.

My foreign card was charged twice. What should I do?+

First work out whether it is two pending items or two posted ones. If posted twice, contact the merchant and get a reference, then tell your bank with your evidence if it is not fixed.

How many days does a refund on a foreign credit card take?+

There is no fixed number. It depends on the merchant, its bank, the network and your bank. Ask the merchant when the refund was issued and your bank how long foreign refunds normally take.

Do hotel refunds from abroad take long?+

It depends on the hotel's and your bank's processes. Get a receipt and reference at check-out and follow up within the period your bank states. If it runs over, contact the bank.

Why is the baht amount different after a foreign card refund?+

Because payment and refund are converted at different times, the rates can differ, and some fees may not be refunded under your bank's terms. Compare the foreign-currency amounts.

If the merchant will not refund, can my bank help?+

Many banks have a dispute or chargeback process under their own terms. Ask whether your case qualifies and prepare full evidence. The outcome depends on the bank's and network's review.

A pending item disappeared. Does that mean I was not charged?+

Usually if it vanished and no posted item follows, it was released. But some merchants may settle later, so check the next statement and ask your bank if unsure.
