Guangzhou and Shenzhen Travel Guide: Dim Sum, Skylines and the Hong Kong Crossing
Main sights of both Guangdong cities, how to ride high-speed rail, and how to cross from Hong Kong, with a 3-4 day plan.

Коротко
- Guangzhou suits Cantonese food and old streets, while Shenzhen suits shopping and waterfront districts.
- From Hong Kong you can cross at Lo Wu, Futian or Shenzhen Bay, or take the XRL from West Kowloon.
- Hong Kong and the mainland use different networks, so test your data after crossing.
Guangzhou and Shenzhen at a glance
Guangzhou (广州) is the old capital of Guangdong, known for Cantonese food, traditional markets and colonial-era architecture. Shenzhen (深圳) grew from a fishing area into a modern city, known for electronics, theme parks and waterfront districts. The two cities are linked by a short high-speed rail ride, so together they suit a 3-4 day trip that follows Hong Kong.

What to see in Guangzhou
- Canton Tower (广州塔) stands on the Pearl River and is the city landmark. Go up for the view or photograph its lit-up night shape. Check hours and ticket options on the official app or site.
- Shamian Island (沙面岛) was once a foreign concession and keeps European-style buildings and shaded lanes. It is easy to walk and pleasant in the morning.
- Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠) is an ancestral temple covered with detailed ceramic, wood and stone carving, a showcase of Lingnan craftsmanship.
- Beijing Road (北京路) is a long-running pedestrian shopping street. A glass panel in the pavement shows old road layers underneath, and there are many snack and dessert shops.
- A Pearl River night cruise passes lit towers and bridges on both banks. Several piers operate, so buy tickets through official channels.

Dim sum and yum cha culture
Locals call dim sum "yum cha" (饮茶), literally drinking tea. People sit down in the morning or late morning, order a pot of tea and share several small dishes. Traditional halls use carts or a paper tick-list, while newer restaurants usually use a QR code at the table. A small custom: tap two fingers on the table to thank whoever pours your tea, and lift the lid of the pot to ask for more hot water.

What to see in Shenzhen
- Window of the World (世界之窗) is a park of scaled-down world landmarks that can fill a whole day.
- OCT Harbour (欢乐海岸) is a waterfront complex with restaurants, shops and canals, best in the evening.
- Huaqiangbei (华强北) is one of China's biggest electronics districts, selling components, gadgets and accessories. Inspect items and keep receipts.
- Dafen Oil Painting Village (大芬油画村) is an artists' quarter producing copies and original work. You can browse studios and commission a painting from a photo.
- Shekou (蛇口) is a seaside district with international restaurants, art venues and a ferry terminal.

Taking high-speed rail between the cities
Guangzhou and Shenzhen are linked by many high-speed trains a day. The main Guangzhou station is Guangzhou South (广州南); on the Shenzhen side you will see Shenzhen North (深圳北) and Futian (福田). Book through the official 12306 app or website (English version, foreign passports accepted). Carry the same passport you booked with and arrive early because of security checks.
Crossing from Hong Kong
There are several crossings: Lo Wu (罗湖), linked to the MTR East Rail line; Lok Ma Chau/Futian (福田口岸), close to the Shenzhen metro; and Shenzhen Bay (深圳湾口岸), convenient for Shekou. The other route is the Express Rail Link (XRL) from West Kowloon station straight to Futian or Guangzhou South, with immigration handled at the station itself.
A 3-4 day plan
- 1Day 1: cross into ShenzhenCross from Hong Kong, check in, then stroll OCT Harbour or Shekou in the evening.
- 2Day 2: shopping and artHuaqiangbei in the morning, Dafen village in the afternoon, or swap in Window of the World.
- 3Day 3: train to GuangzhouTake the high-speed train to Guangzhou, have yum cha, visit Beijing Road and Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, then a Pearl River night cruise.
- 4Day 4: old quarter and returnShamian Island in the morning, Canton Tower if time allows, then return to Hong Kong by XRL or travel on.
Data and payments on the trip
Google, LINE, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are usually not reachable on mainland networks or hotel Wi-Fi. A travel eSIM from a non-Chinese provider usually routes data through a gateway outside the mainland, like roaming, which is why those apps usually open. Nobody can guarantee every app on every network, so test before relying on it. Keep your Thai SIM on for SMS and bank OTP. For payments, Alipay and WeChat Pay accept foreign Visa and Mastercard; set up and verify your passport before the trip and carry some cash and a physical card as backup.
