Travel insurance: do you need it, what it covers, and how to compare policies

Коротко

  • Travel insurance is not mandatory on every trip, but it reduces financial risk from the unexpected, such as medical care abroad, trip cancellation, lost bags or delays. Whether you need it depends on the destination, activities, health, and what cover you already have, such as through a credit card.
  • Do not judge by plan names. Read the insurer's full policy documents, especially the exclusions and the claims process. If your destination requires proof of insurance, check with the embassy or immigration authority directly.

What travel insurance is

Travel insurance is a short-term policy covering certain risks during a trip. You pay a premium up front, and if an event covered by the policy occurs, the insurer may pay costs according to the conditions and limits stated. Not every event is covered, and not every cost is reimbursed in full.

Exclusions you must read in full

The real difference between policies lies in exclusions rather than plan names, because exclusions say what the insurer will not pay for. Read this section before the benefits summary table.

  • Pre-existing conditions: often subject to special terms or excluded; check how the policy defines them.
  • Risky activities: adventure sports, riding motorbikes, deep diving or climbing may need an add-on or be excluded.
  • Alcohol and drugs: related incidents are often declined.
  • Areas under travel warnings, war or epidemics: some insurers exclude them.
  • Negligence: for example leaving valuables unattended may lead to a refusal.
  • Age and trip-length limits: check that your trip falls within them.
If a policy clause is unclear, ask the insurer or agent in writing and keep the reply. Do not rely on verbal explanations alone.

When a destination or visa asks for proof of insurance

Some countries, visa types or travel schemes require travel insurance with proof, and these requirements can change. This article therefore does not say which countries do. Check directly with that country's embassy, consulate or immigration authority.

If such a rule applies, check whether the policy needs particular cover or limits, and which language or format the proof must be in.

Cover that comes with a credit card: conditions to check

Some credit cards include travel cover, but the conditions are often tied to how you spend, for example paying the fare or tour with that card, and the cover may be narrower than a separately bought policy.

  • Must the fare or package be paid with that card, in full or in part?
  • Who is covered: the cardholder, a spouse, children or travelling companions?
  • Which types of cover actually exist and which do not; medical expenses may not be included.
  • How to claim and the deadline for reporting an incident.
  • The issuer can change the terms, so read the latest issuer documents before every trip.

If the card cover does not address what worries you, for example overseas medical costs, a separate policy may suit better. Decide from the real documents on both sides.

How to compare policies without anyone's numbers

  1. 1Start from your trip's risksWrite down what worries you most, such as medical bills, prepaid trip costs or what you carry, so you know which covers matter.
  2. 2Get the insurer's official documentsDownload the full policy wording and benefits table from the insurer's website rather than relying on ads or an intermediary's summary.
  3. 3Read exclusions and claim conditions firstCheck whether your trip and activities hit an exclusion and how quickly you must report an incident.
  4. 4Compare like with like across insurersUse the same list for each: medical limit, main exclusions, round-the-clock contact, how upfront payment works, and the live price that day.
  5. 5Decide before you leave and match the trip datesMake sure the start and end dates cover the whole trip, and keep the documents in both digital and paper form.

Preparing for a claim

Whether a claim succeeds often comes down to paperwork. Prepare along these lines in advance.

  • Keep every receipt and medical record, including doctor's certificates and test results.
  • For lost or stolen items, file a report with local police and get a copy.
  • For delayed or damaged bags, report to the airline at the airport and keep the irregularity report.
  • Contact the insurer's assistance centre before costly treatment if the policy requires notice.
  • Take photos, note dates, times and places, and record the names of people you contact.

A common misunderstanding is that everything is claimable if you hold a policy. In reality the insurer reviews each case against the terms, and no one can guarantee the outcome in advance.

When something goes wrong: staying reachable and online

When something goes wrong you may need to call an assistance centre, send documents and look up a hospital or police station, all of which need internet. A data eSIM installed in advance helps you reach people straight away. A data-only eSIM has no regular phone number, so use internet calling apps and check the destination's emergency numbers beforehand.

Вопросы и ответы

Do I have to buy travel insurance for every trip abroad?+

Not always. It depends on destination, activities, health and what you already have. Some countries or visas require proof, so check with the official authorities.

What is travel insurance and how does it differ from health insurance?+

It is a short-term policy bundling several trip risks, while ordinary health insurance may not cover treatment abroad. Check the documents of any policy you already hold.

Is card-provided cover enough?+

It depends on whether it covers what you worry about and whether you meet the conditions, such as paying the fare with that card. Read the issuer's documents in full.

When should I buy a policy?+

Before departure, with dates covering the whole trip. For cancellation cover, check whether the policy must be bought within a certain period after you pay for the trip.

Will the insurer pay hospital bills directly?+

Some policies offer direct billing through an assistance centre, while in other cases you pay first and claim later. See the claims process in the policy documents.

Can I claim for a lost or broken phone?+

Some policies cover it only in certain cases with strict conditions, such as a police report. See our articles on device cover and on what to do when a phone is lost.

Which exclusions do people most often overlook?+

Pre-existing conditions, risky activities, alcohol-related incidents, and limits around looking after belongings. Read the exclusions section before buying.
