Landing at Chiang Mai International Airport

One of the closest airports to its own city in Thailand — the old town is minutes away once you are out of the door.

Have the line enabled before you fly and turn airplane mode off on landing; a local network picks it up right away, so you can order a ride into town from inside the terminal instead of hunting for Wi-Fi.

What CNX is like

Chiang Mai is a mid-sized, easy airport to walk, and its real advantage is how short the ride into town is — a late landing is still a simple evening. Coverage in the city and around the moat is solid; the mountain roads and hill villages people head to next are where it starts to change.

On arrival

Have the line enabled before you fly and turn airplane mode off on landing; a local network picks it up right away, so you can order a ride into town from inside the terminal instead of hunting for Wi-Fi.

Where on the way you need your own data

  1. Land
  2. Immigration
  3. Baggage
  4. Wi-Fi, terms not stated
  5. Leave the building
  6. Train or bus to town
  7. Hotel

Airport Wi-Fi only helps while you are inside, and usually behind a sign-in page. The rest of the way to your hotel needs your own data. Install an eSIM before you fly and switch it on at landing.

How far the airport Wi-Fi gets you

The terminal has public Wi-Fi, though the ride into town is so short that most people never get round to using it; a line that already works is quicker in practice.

Getting into town

Red trucks, taxis and app-hailed cars all operate, and the run to the old town is short with signal all the way. If you are heading up the mountain the next day, download the route first — there are gaps up there.

What people ask about this airport

  • The smoke season: Air quality changes noticeably at the end of the dry season. An air-quality app costs almost no data and genuinely helps plan a day.
  • Download maps for the hills: Mountain roads and hill villages have stretches with no service; an offline map removes the problem entirely.

Questions

Getting online at CNX

Is there signal up at Doi Suthep?+

The main visitor areas up there have coverage, but the climb itself and the bends shaded by the hillside drop out in places; it returns once you reach the car park.

Do I re-activate the line for a domestic flight?+

No. The line runs continuously for the life of the plan; flying inside the country does not require reinstalling anything — just use airplane mode in flight as usual.
