What Agra is like on a phone

Most people come to Agra for one thing and stay a single night, so the rhythm of the town is set by when the Taj opens, well before daylight. Around the gates you get small hotels, rooftop restaurants and a constant stream of people selling things on the walk in. Coverage through town is steady, but at dawn, when several thousand visitors queue at the same gate, pulling a ticket up on screen is noticeably slower than usual.

When you land

Most arrivals come by train into Agra Cantt, the main station, or by road from Delhi on the Yamuna Expressway; some take a fast morning service and return the same evening. Have the line running before you step down, because auto drivers start quoting at the exit and an app keeps the fare settled. If you are staying in Taj Ganj, tell the driver which gate — the monument has several entrances and they are a fair walk apart.

Where coverage changes

Fatehabad Road and the Sadar area are fine all day, as is the ground around Agra Fort. What changes is the holding area outside the east and west gates before dawn, where simultaneous use by a dense crowd slows everything. Inside the gardens the line still works; inside the marble chamber it goes quiet. Across the river at Mehtab Bagh, where people watch the sunset, it is weaker than the town side — open riverbank with little behind it.

Agra is lighter than the big cities because you spend most of it inside one place: about 500MB to 1GB a day covers maps, rides and the ticket. What spikes it is shooting hundreds of photos at sunrise and uploading the lot before the train home, which can add a gigabyte in one go. Do that from the hotel, or at least after the gate crowd has dispersed, since uploads crawl in the middle of it.

• Taj Ganj — The lane district by the south gate, a few minutes' walk from the entrance; the alleys are tangled and unlit before dawn, so save the walking route before you leave the room at five.
• Fatehabad Road — The strip of larger hotels and restaurants with easy vehicle access — the practical choice if a car is waiting for you, since hailing here is simpler than in the lanes.
• Agra Fort & Kinari Bazaar — The fort sits on a main road and is easy to reach, but the bazaar behind it is a car-free tangle where GPS drifts; walk back to the main road before ordering a ride.
• Agra Cantt — Around the main station, the start and end of every day trip; platforms can change close to departure, so read the board alongside the app.

Day trips out of the city

• Fatehpur Sikri — About an hour west on a well-covered road; the sandstone city on its ridge works normally, though the wide sunlit courtyards heat a phone and drain it fast, so carry a power bank.
• Mathura and Vrindavan — An hour and a half north to pilgrimage towns where the temple lanes are narrow and packed on festival days; at those times the network is loaded enough that photos send slowly, so fix a meeting point in advance.
• Bharatpur bird sanctuary — Ninety minutes across into Rajasthan; inside it is wide wetland you cross on foot or by cycle, and the line thins as you get further in, so save the internal trail map before entering.
