What Udaipur is like on a phone

Udaipur is smaller than Rajasthan's other cities and far more walkable, so you spend your time in the narrow streets around Lake Pichola rather than crossing town by car. People gravitate to the palace on the water, the ghats on the Hanuman side, and rooftops facing the sunset. Around the lake the line is steady, but on stone-walled terraces and in lanes hemmed by tall buildings it wavers more than it does in the open.

When you land

Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) at Dabok lies east of town, around forty minutes in. Others arrive by train at Udaipur City station, or by road from Jodhpur and Jaipur. Turn the line on before leaving the hall or stepping down, because many stays sit in lanes no car can enter and you will need to arrange a drop-off point with them. If you land at night, ask the property to meet you where the car stops: the lanes are dark and the signs are small.

Where coverage changes

Around Lake Pichola and the palace quarter the line is good, as it is on the road circling Fateh Sagar. What changes is the lane network on the Hanuman Ghat side, where tall old houses make GPS drift, and the climb toward the Monsoon Palace, which thins with height and tree cover. Out on a boat the lake is still usable, the city being all around it, though a corner shadowed by an island slows briefly. The roads into the Aravalli hills start dropping once the bends begin.

What a day here costs in data

Getting around costs little here because you walk: roughly 800MB to 1.5GB a day covers maps, searching for places and booking a boat. What actually consumes is photos and clips, since nearly every corner asks to be shot. Uploading a big set each night pushes you to about 2–3GB. During wedding season, when hotels fill and several large events run at once, evening uploads can be slow — the morning goes faster.

• Lal Ghat & the palace side — Tight waterside lanes full of guesthouses and rooftop restaurants where no car can pass; photograph your doorway on arrival, because the signs are small and the houses look alike.
• Hanuman Ghat — The quieter far bank with the full palace view; reachable over a small footbridge, though it is poorly lit at night — learn the way back before dark.
• Fateh Sagar — The northern lake with a broad shore road where locals cycle in the evening; easier to hail a ride than in the lanes, since vehicles reach every point of it.
• The Monsoon Palace ridge — A hilltop outside town reached only by vehicle; the final bends are weak, so agree a pickup time with your driver before going up.

Day trips out of the city

• Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur — Two to three hours on hill roads; the line follows the villages and drops between passes. Along the fort's ridge wall there are spots with nothing at all, so fix a meeting point at the entrance.
• Chittorgarh — Two hours north-east; the fort sits on a plateau so large you drive between its sites. Most of it is usable, but download the layout first because the highlights are far apart.
• Mount Abu — Four or five hours south-west to the state's only hill station; the final climb twists and the line wavers with it, though the town itself is normal. Download the map before you start up.
