What Goa is like on a phone

Goa is not a city but a long coastal state, so people pick a base first and then ride out one beach at a time. The north around Anjuna and Vagator is busy and full of cafés where remote workers keep the same table all day. The south is far quieter, and some coves hold little more than a shack or two. Coverage is good along the main roads and through Panjim, then thins as the tarmac narrows into the dirt tracks that end at the sand.

When you land

Goa now has two airports: Manohar International (GOX) at Mopa in the north and Dabolim (GOI) in the south near Vasco da Gama. The distance from each to your beach differs enormously, so check which coast your stay is on before booking the flight. Turn the line on before you leave the hall — the airport taxi ranks run on a local queue system, and being able to compare or order in an app makes the choice easier. The highway north or south holds signal nearly the whole way.

Where coverage changes

Panjim and Fontainhas stay strong, being the administrative and shopping core, and the northern strip — Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Assagao — is comfortable all day. The difference shows in the south, from Palolem down to Agonda, where wooded headlands leave some coves slow enough that photos crawl. The dirt approach roads through coconut groves and paddy also dip for short stretches. In the monsoon, worry less about the signal and more about which lanes are passable after days of rain.

What a day here costs in data

On a pure beach holiday you may not reach 1GB a day, because most of it is spent lying down. Ride a scooter by map and hunt a new place for every meal and you are at about 1–2GB. The heavy users are remote workers taking calls from cafés and tethering a laptop, who can run around 3–4GB a day. Uploading a sunset clip each evening adds a chunk on its own; it goes faster from the room than from the sand.

Districts travellers ask about

• Anjuna & Vagator — Rocky beaches and a weekly flea market that fills up by mid-afternoon; places sit scattered across the slopes, so a pin and the actual gate are often tens of metres apart.
• Panjim & Fontainhas — The state capital and its lane of brightly painted old houses; easy on foot with a good line, a sensible place to sort bookings before heading out.
• Palolem & Patnem — Quiet southern crescents lined with beach huts; usable along the shack row, though the end of the bay shielded by the headland slows down noticeably.
• Assagao — An inland pocket of rental houses and garden restaurants; the lanes are small and numbering is vague, so always ask your host for a landmark in advance.

Day trips out of the city

• Dudhsagar Falls — The last leg runs by jeep deep into forest, where the line is gone for most of it; agree the meeting point and return time with your driver before you set off.
• Old Goa and Divar Island — The old churches sit on the main road and behave normally; the short ferry across dips mid-channel, and the island itself is quieter than the mainland.
• Down the coast to Gokarna — About three hours south across the Karnataka line; the coastal hill road thins in places and the cliff paths between beaches have next to nothing, so download the map before leaving Goa.
