What Madrid is like on a phone

People come to Madrid for very different reasons: the three great art museums, football, work, or simply as the hub before a high-speed train elsewhere. The city sits on a high plateau and is laid out with broad avenues and large squares, so signals travel well and the whole place feels steadier than many coastal old towns. Where it changes is late evening, when an entire barrio goes out to eat at the same hour.

When you land

Barajas (MAD) has four terminals and connects to town by metro line 8, the Cercanías trains or an airport bus. Switch the eSIM on before you leave the building, because you will be calling a car or buying a ticket on screen straight away. High-speed services run from Atocha and Chamartín, both of which get dense at rush hour. The ride in is fairly continuous, apart from the long metro tunnels before you reach the centre.

Where coverage changes

Madrid's wide streets let the signal spread across the whole centre — Sol, the Gran Vía, the edges of the Retiro. What differs are the older lanes of La Latina and Lavapiés, tighter and a little less certain about where you are standing. Inside the Prado and the Reina Sofía, thick walls and weekend crowds pull the speed down far enough that you should not rely on anything loading while you are in there. A stadium on match day is the extreme case: tens of thousands online in one bowl.

What a day here costs in data

Daytime in Madrid often costs less than expected, because the big museums are close enough to walk between. It picks up in the evening, when you are finding a restaurant, booking a table and calling a ride home, on top of menu translation and photos sent to the family. A typical day is about a gigabyte; watch a match stream on the phone or tether a laptop through the afternoon and that climbs quickly.

Districts travellers ask about

• Sol and the Gran Vía — The busiest thoroughfare in the city; the width helps the signal, but on a weekend evening it sags because the pavements are full end to end.
• Malasaña — Small shops and bars where locals go out late; quiet and fast in daytime, but after ten at night the bandwidth on one street is being shared by a great many people.
• Salamanca — A grid of wide streets and moderate building heights, making it one of the easier parts of town for a video call or an afternoon of laptop work.
• La Latina and Lavapiés — Older, sloping and tighter than the rest, so your pin can be a junction out, most noticeably during the Sunday market when the crowd packs in.

Day trips out of the city

• Toledo — A short high-speed run with an unbroken connection, but the old town is a walled hill of narrow stone lanes where your position wanders and anything inside thick masonry slows right down.
• Segovia — The line passes through tunnels under the sierra with long stretches of nothing, then opens out in town, where the square beneath the Roman aqueduct is wide and works well.
• El Escorial — The suburban train climbs into the foothills with thin patches along the way, and inside the vast stone monastery itself you should not plan on loading anything as you walk through.
