🇦🇮 Anguilla

Anguilla eSIM

Anguilla is a flat coral island barely twenty kilometres long, with no mountains, no rivers and no single town you can spend a whole day walking around. What it has is white sand scattered right around the coast and very good restaurants sitting far apart from one another. Most people fly into Sint Maarten first and cross by boat, so the first and last day of the trip are tied to a sailing schedule whether you like it or not. Restaurants and taxi drivers here take bookings by phone and WhatsApp, which means data is what lets you hold a table by the water and arrange the ride back while you are still on the beach.

How much data you actually need

Expect roughly 300MB to 1GB a day, since most of it goes on messaging restaurants, calling a taxi, mapping the drive to the next beach and posting photos in the evening. If you go live or upload video every day, budget nearer 2GB a day instead.

When you land

The island's airport is Clayton J. Lloyd International (AXA) at The Valley, which handles regional flights and charters. The route most visitors actually take, though, is to land at Princess Juliana (SXM) on Sint Maarten and cross by water: either the public ferry from the Marigot jetty on the French side, or a private charter boat from the dock near the airport, both arriving at Blowing Point, which is the sea immigration post. Have your line working before you board, because sailings shift with the swell.

Where coverage changes

The island is small and flat, so coverage reaches most of the main road that runs from Blowing Point through The Valley out to West End, along with Sandy Ground and the Shoal Bay beaches. It thins noticeably at the eastern tip around Junks Hole and Windward Point, where the road turns to dirt, and on the small boats out to the offshore cays — Sandy Island, Prickly Pear and Dog Island are uninhabited and have no masts of their own.

Cities travellers ask about

  • The ValleyThe tiny capital, holding the banks, the shops and the airport.
  • Blowing PointThe ferry harbour for Saint Martin and the sea immigration post.
  • Sandy GroundThe sailing bay and beach bars, and the busiest place after dark.
  • Shoal Bay EastThe famous north-coast beach, where everyone is posting by mid-afternoon.
  • West End and Meads BayThe resort and restaurant end of the island's western tip.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp, the main way restaurants and taxi drivers take bookings
  • Google Maps for beaches and restaurants scattered around the island
  • The booking sites of the ferry and charter-boat operators from SXM

FAQ

Will my phone hop networks on the boat over from Saint Martin?+

Yes. The channel between the two islands is narrow, so a handset commonly flips between the Saint-Martin or Sint Maarten side and Anguilla during the crossing. The thing to know is that Anguilla and Saint Martin are separate territories as far as networks are concerned: a plan that names one does not automatically include the other. Open the plan's territory list before buying and check Anguilla is actually on it, especially if you are sleeping on the Saint Martin side and crossing over for day trips.

Is there a ride-hailing app on Anguilla, and how do people get around?+

There is no ride-hailing app. You move around by licensed taxi, charged on set point-to-point fares, or by rental car if you would rather drive. The local habit is to take your driver's number on the first trip and book every later ride on WhatsApp, because the beaches and restaurants are spread out and there is no bus network to fall back on. Driving is on the left, as on many islands here, and crossing the island end to end takes roughly twenty to thirty minutes.

The villa already has Wi-Fi — do I still need my own data?+

Villa Wi-Fi only helps while you are in the villa, and most of an Anguilla trip is spent on a beach, in a car or on a boat — exactly when you need to confirm a table, push a pickup back half an hour, or check the last sailing to Saint Martin. The part people forget is the day they leave: if the onward flight from SXM moves, you hear about it from the airline email on your phone, not from the Wi-Fi of a place you checked out of that morning.

When does a Anguilla eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
