🇹🇹 Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago eSIM

Trinidad and Tobago are two islands that feel nothing alike. Trinidad is industrial and urban, with real traffic and a carnival that stops the country; Tobago is small and visited for diving and rainforest. Getting between them means a short flight or the fast inter-island ferry, both of which need booking ahead. Buying the ticket, checking the sailing time and arranging a driver all happen on the phone.

Before you buy for Trinidad and Tobago

Every Trinidad and Tobago eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.

What happens when your GB runs out

A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

How to check your data and top up

How much data you actually need

Most visitors use around 800MB–1.5GB a day, with maps open while stuck in traffic and WhatsApp running all day. During carnival week, when everyone is filming, budget up to 2.5GB a day.

When you land

Piarco International on Trinidad (POS) sits about half an hour outside Port of Spain, while Tobago is served by A. N. R. Robinson International (TAB) near Crown Point. The alternative is the fast inter-island ferry between Port of Spain and Scarborough, roughly two and a half hours, which has to be booked online in advance because seats fill quickly around long weekends.

Where coverage changes

Signal is dense along the east–west corridor from Port of Spain to Arima, down the highway to San Fernando and around Chaguanas, and on Tobago it holds at Crown Point and Scarborough. It thins in the Northern Range, along the north coast at Grande Riviere and Toco, across the Nariva and Caroni wetlands, and inside the Main Ridge Forest Reserve at Tobago's northern end.

Cities travellers ask about

  • Port of Spain — Trinidad's capital; good coverage but heavy rush-hour traffic.
  • Chaguanas — Central commercial town and a stop on the main highway.
  • San Fernando — Main southern city and the base for the Pitch Lake.
  • Scarborough — Tobago's main town, with the ferry terminal and market.
  • Crown Point — Accommodation cluster by Tobago's airport, walkable to beaches.
  • Charlotteville — Fishing village at the island's tip; patchy on the way in.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp, the default way locals arrange anything
  • The inter-island ferry booking site for Port of Spain–Scarborough
  • Google Maps with both islands saved offline before heading inland

FAQ

Should I fly or take the ferry between the two islands?+

The flight takes about twenty minutes and is far easier if time is tight, though seats sell out fast around carnival and long weekends. The ferry is cheaper and takes more luggage, but runs about two and a half hours and can be delayed by sea conditions. Either way, book online in advance and keep the ticket saved as an image on the phone.

Does the network slow down during carnival?+

It genuinely does in the densest spots — the parade route through Port of Spain and the late-night events in the days before — because everyone is filming and streaming at once. The fix is to agree meeting points with your group in advance rather than relying on messages, download the parade route map, and carry a power bank, since constantly hunting for signal drains the battery faster than usual.

Will I have data birdwatching at Caroni or hiking the Main Ridge?+

Mostly not. The Caroni mangrove boat tours head out in the late afternoon into channels with no service, and the trails in Tobago's Main Ridge Forest Reserve sit under dense canopy. Save the meeting point, your guide's number and the offline map before you set out, and tell your accommodation roughly what time you expect to be back.

How do I get around Trinidad without a car?+

Locals use maxi taxis, shared vans running set routes, and H-plate taxis that pick up passengers along the way; neither runs to a fixed timetable, so you ask about routes on the spot. The easier route for a first-time visitor is to arrange a driver through your accommodation and confirm each day's timing over WhatsApp, which is exactly why you want data on you.

When does a Trinidad and Tobago eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
