Dominica eSIM

Dominica is a nature island rather than a resort island. People come for hiking, waterfalls and hot springs instead of lying on sand, and many of the trails run deep into forest with no service at all. That makes agreeing pick-up times with a guide or driver in advance far more important here than assuming you can call each other from halfway up a mountain.

How much data you actually need

About 500MB to 1GB a day for messaging, maps and photos, and far less on hiking days simply because there is nothing to connect to. If you are working remotely from Roseau or Portsmouth, budget more like 2 to 3GB a day.

When you land

The main airport is Douglas-Charles (DOM) on the northeast coast, about ninety minutes by road from Roseau, with the smaller Canefield (DCF) near the capital for light aircraft. There are no long-haul jets, so almost everyone connects through Antigua, Barbados or Saint Lucia. The L'Express des Iles ferry also runs from Guadeloupe and Martinique into Roseau, which many visitors prefer.

Where coverage changes

Roseau, Portsmouth and the coastal roads on both sides of the island have usable service. What disappears is the middle of Morne Trois Pitons National Park, the walk in to the Boiling Lake and the Valley of Desolation, many segments of the Waitukubuli National Trail, and the mountain roads that cut across the island, where the signal comes and goes the whole way.

Cities travellers ask about

  • RoseauSeafront capital, the base for waterfalls and hot springs.
  • PortsmouthNorthern town near the Indian River and Cabrits.
  • CalibishieNorth coast village close to Douglas-Charles airport.
  • SoufriereSouthern bay with volcanic bubbles you can snorkel over.
  • LaudatTrailhead village for the Boiling Lake and Trafalgar Falls.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp for guides, drivers and guesthouses
  • Organic Maps or Google Maps with the island saved offline
  • L'Express des Iles for ferry times to Guadeloupe and Martinique

FAQ

Will I have any signal on the Boiling Lake hike?+

Mostly not. The walk takes something like six to eight hours there and back, through valleys and thick forest with no service for nearly all of it. The sensible rules are to go with a local guide, tell your guesthouse when you left and when you expect to be back, and download the trail map onto the phone while you are still in town with a connection.

How do I get from Douglas-Charles airport to Roseau?+

By taxi or a shared transfer, roughly ninety minutes on a winding mountain road. Arrange it with your accommodation before you fly, especially for an evening arrival, because the public minibuses do not run to match flight times and the signal drops out on parts of the drive, which makes sorting a car out on the spot harder than it sounds.

Has the island recovered from the hurricanes?+

The main infrastructure is working again, but repairs are an ongoing job rather than a finished one. Individual roads and trail segments still close temporarily after heavy rain or a landslip. Before committing to a particular hike, ask your guesthouse or guide whether that route is actually open that week, instead of relying on a blog post written a few years ago.

When does a Dominica eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
