Bonaire eSIM

Bonaire is first and foremost a diving island: shore-dive sites run the length of the west coast, each marked by a painted yellow stone at the roadside. Most visitors rent a pickup, carry their own tanks and pick an entry point by mood each morning. Before getting in the water you pay the marine park nature fee online, and visitors also settle the tourist entry tax on a website before travelling — both reasons to have a working line from day one.

How much data you actually need

A typical dive trip uses about 400MB to 1GB a day, since most hours are underwater or spent driving between entry points. If you upload underwater video each night or work remotely from the apartment between dives, budget 2GB a day or more.

When you land

The single airport is Flamingo International (BON), right beside Kralendijk and a few minutes from town. Visitors pay the tourist entry tax online before travelling, and anyone diving or using the marine park buys the nature fee separately on a website. Switch the line on at the airport so you can pull up those e-receipts and confirm the rental pickup, which almost everyone here needs.

Where coverage changes

Coverage is good in Kralendijk, along the west-coast road where the dive markers line up, and around Lac Bay on the windsurfing side. It thins in Washington Slagbaai National Park in the north, a long circuit of gravel track with stretches that have nothing at all, across the salt pans at the southern tip, and on uninhabited Klein Bonaire just offshore.

Cities travellers ask about

  • KralendijkMain town and pier, where the dive shops and restaurants are.
  • Lac BayShallow east-coast bay used for windsurfing all day.
  • RinconHistoric northern village on the way to Washington Slagbaai.
  • Klein BonaireUninhabited islet offshore, reached by daytime shuttle boat.
  • The southern salt pansCoastal drive past salt works and slave huts; signal is patchy.

Apps to install before you fly

  • The marine park nature fee site, paid before your first dive
  • The visitor entry tax site, settled before you arrive
  • Google Maps saved offline for finding the roadside dive sites
  • WhatsApp for tank rentals and the car hire desk

FAQ

When do I pay the nature fee and the entry tax?+

Both are handled online. The visitor entry tax should be settled before you reach the island, and the marine park nature fee before your first time in the water, since dive shops usually ask for proof before handing over tanks. Save both receipts as files or screenshots on the device, because some entry points sit where the signal is too weak to open an old email.

What should I prepare for driving Washington Slagbaai park?+

The park is a multi-hour gravel loop and long stretches have no signal at all. Download the island map first, carry enough water, fill the tank, and check the closing time, because entry and exit are restricted to set hours. Tell your accommodation roughly when you expect to be back, and do not count on phoning for help from inside: on a weekday very few other vehicles come past.

Do I need a big plan if I am only here to dive?+

Usually not, because dive days consume very little: the phone spends most of the day in the truck or a dry bag. A mid-size plan covers a week built around maps, messages and photos. The exceptions are editing and uploading underwater video every evening, or using the apartment as an office between dives — in either case, double your daily figure before you choose.

When does a Bonaire eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
