How much data you actually need
Around 500MB to 1.2GB a day for forecasts, chart apps, messaging the crew and photos. If a whole boat tethers off one handset, multiply that by the number of people leaning on the hotspot, because a shared line on a charter goes far faster than you expect.
When you land
The main airport is Terrance B. Lettsome (EIS) on Beef Island, joined to Tortola by a bridge, with smaller strips on Virgin Gorda (VIJ) and Anegada (NGD). Many visitors arrive by sea instead, on the ferries from St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands into Road Town or West End. Have the line running before you reach the immigration desk so you can pull up bookings and onward details without queueing twice.
Where coverage changes
Coverage is usable around Road Town, Cane Garden Bay, Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda and White Bay on Jost Van Dyke. It thins on Anegada, a low coral island well off to the north, in the bays on Tortola's north shore where the ridge blocks the line of sight, and out in the middle of the channel at night. If you anchor in a quiet bay, expect to be offline until you sail in the morning.

Will I have signal living aboard a charter boat?+
In stretches. Sailing the channel and anchoring off a bay with a village or resort nearby usually works fine, but tucked-away bays behind a ridge, and the run out towards Anegada, will drop you. What most crews do is download the forecast and the charts in the morning while still on the mooring, then sail, rather than relying on loading anything once they are out on the water.
When do I switch the eSIM on if I arrive by ferry from St. Thomas?+
Turn it on as the boat comes in to Road Town or West End rather than while you are still on the U.S. side, since those are two different destinations. Once ashore, set the eSIM as your data line, switch data roaming off on your home SIM, and open a map or messaging app once to confirm it has actually attached to a local network before you leave the ferry dock.
What should I prepare for a day trip to The Baths or Anegada?+
Save everything you need on the device before you set out: the boat ticket, the return time, the skipper's number and the map area. The Baths get crowded enough that the network slows at peak hours, and Anegada is far enough out that parts of it have nothing at all. Take a power bank too, because a phone that spends the day searching for a network runs down much faster than usual.
When does a British Virgin Islands eSIM start counting days?+

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
