Guadeloupe is shaped like a butterfly whose two wings have almost nothing in common. Grande-Terre is flat, full of beaches and holiday towns; Basse-Terre is the volcano La Soufrière and rainforest inside a national park, and a bridge over the narrow channel joins them. Beyond that sit the smaller islands — Les Saintes, Marie-Galante and La Désirade — each another boat ride away. It is a French overseas department, the currency is the euro and almost everything is conducted in French, so your data does double duty: navigation, and translating a menu.

Driving between the two wings works out at roughly 800MB to 1.5GB a day once you count navigation, looking places up, booking the boat to an outer island and translating as you go. Add nightly uploads of waterfall footage or a video call home and it sits closer to 2GB a day.
The gateway is Guadeloupe Pôle Caraïbes (PTP) at Pointe-à-Pitre, with small strips on the outer islands at Marie-Galante (GBJ), La Désirade (DSD) and Terre-de-Haut in Les Saintes (LSS). The sea matters just as much: the passenger terminal at Pointe-à-Pitre and the quay at Trois-Rivières send boats to Les Saintes and Marie-Galante daily, and fast ferries run on to Dominica and Martinique. Turn the line on at the airport, because collecting a car and getting out of the urban area needs the map from the first minute.
Coverage is dense across the urban area around Pointe-à-Pitre, Les Abymes and Baie-Mahault, and along the Grande-Terre coast from Le Gosier through Sainte-Anne to Saint-François. Where it genuinely thins is Basse-Terre: the climb to the summit of La Soufrière, the rainforest along the cross-island Route de la Traversée, the tracks to the Carbet Falls, and the northern coast from Deshaies round to Sainte-Rose. The outer islands, Marie-Galante and La Désirade especially, are patchier than the mainland.

Always check first. Guadeloupe is a French overseas department, but travel plans are grouped by where they actually operate rather than by political status, so a Europe plan often leaves Caribbean overseas territories out. The clearest test is to open the plan's territory list and look for Guadeloupe by name, and if you intend to hop to Martinique or Dominica as well, look for those islands in the same list before you buy.
The first and last stretch usually works, but the middle of the crossing drops out because you are a fair way offshore. On the islands themselves service clusters around the villages and the harbour, and thins on the ring road and the emptier beaches. Before boarding, screenshot your ticket, save the island's map offline, and write down when the last boat back leaves — miss it and there is rarely an extra sailing the same day.
Plan as though you will have nothing. The summit sits in cloud and rain most days, and the rainforest canopy is thick enough to block reception entirely. Before leaving your accommodation, save the Basse-Terre map area offline, note the trailhead parking and the route name, check the weather and the park's trail status, and tell someone what time you expect to be back — the paths are slippery and they take longer in practice than the signs suggest.
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
