How much data you actually need
The island is small and the days are spent outdoors, so most visitors use around 300MB to 800MB a day for maps, messages to guides and guesthouses, and sending photos home. If you upload volcano footage every evening, budget closer to 1.5GB a day.
When you land
The island's airport is John A. Osborne (MNI) at Gerald's in the north, taking short hops on light aircraft from Antigua (ANU). The other way in is by sea to Little Bay, the main port and the maritime entry point, used both by the passenger boat from Antigua and by visiting yachts. Get your line working while you are still in Antigua: there are only a handful of departures a day, and a change of time usually reaches you by phone call or message rather than from a board in a terminal.
Where coverage changes
What is usable is the northern half, the part people live in: Little Bay and Brades, through Salem and Woodlands, up to the airport at Gerald's. The restricted zone in the south around Plymouth and the flanks of the volcano has no residents and no services of any kind. Beyond that, the deep ravines locals call ghauts and the forest trails through the Centre Hills cut in and out, and so does the boat run along the west coast to Rendezvous Bay.

Can I visit Plymouth inside the restricted zone, and will my phone work there?+
Access is controlled by the authorities and changes with the volcano's activity level; in practice it means going with an authorised guide and arranging permission beforehand, not driving in on your own. Nobody lives in that area and nothing is serviced there, so do not count on having signal — treat it as time offline, tell your guesthouse who you are going with and when you expect to be back, and check the published volcano status before every trip.
Should I come by plane or by boat from Antigua?+
The light aircraft from Antigua is quick and keeps to time better, but seats and baggage allowances are tight. The boat carries more people but depends on sea conditions and on a schedule that gets adjusted. Whichever you take, leave a generous gap before any international connection in Antigua, and keep the operator's number saved on your phone, because changes tend to be messaged to passengers directly rather than posted on a website straight away.
What should I do about signal before hiking in the Centre Hills?+
Assume you will have nothing for most of the route: the forest canopy and the deep ghauts block almost everything. Before you set off, save the map area offline, keep your guide's and guesthouse's numbers on the device, and leave your walking plan with someone in the village who knows what time you are due back. Charge fully and carry a power bank, because a handset that keeps hunting for a network drains far faster than usual.
When does a Montserrat eSIM start counting days?+
