🇧🇱 Saint Barthélemy

Saint Barthélemy eSIM

Saint Barthélemy is a small island of about twenty square kilometres, made of steep hills with little bays tucked behind them. Almost everyone arrives from Sint Maarten, by boat or on one of the light aircraft that are the only planes able to use the runway here. Getting around means driving a small car up and down narrow roads; there is no bus network to lean on. The well-known restaurants in Gustavia and around the bays need booking ahead and usually answer by message, so data here is about confirming a table, meeting the person dropping off your car, and finding the way home after dark.

How much data you actually need

Most days come in at roughly 400MB to 1GB: navigating the hill roads, booking restaurants, and sending photos of the bays home. If you film from a boat and upload every evening, budget nearer 2GB a day.

When you land

The island's airport is Gustaf III (SBH) at St Jean, which takes only light aircraft and operates in daylight. Nearly every flight is a very short hop from Princess Juliana (SXM) on Sint Maarten. The other route people use just as often is the passenger boat into Gustavia harbour, leaving from either the Dutch or the French side of Saint Martin depending on the operator. Have the line running while you are still at SXM, since both the connecting flight and the boat get retimed with the wind and the swell.

Where coverage changes

The island is small enough that the main roads and villages are well served — Gustavia, St Jean, Lorient and Flamands all work fine. What the terrain does is shadow the bays that sit behind a ridge: Colombier, which you can only reach on foot or by boat, drops off noticeably, as do Saline and Gouverneur, where there are no buildings at all, and so does any boat trip out to the offshore rocks far enough from land to leave you with nothing.

Cities travellers ask about

  • GustaviaThe harbour town and restaurant quarter; parking is tight in the evening.
  • St JeanThe beach in front of the runway, plus the shops; busy online all day.
  • LorientA quiet north-coast village with a grocery and a surf break.
  • FlamandsA wide north-western bay with hotels along the sand.
  • ColombierA beach reachable only on foot or by boat, where signal drops.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp for restaurant bookings and villa managers
  • Google Maps or Waze for the steep roads and narrow junctions
  • The booking sites of the ferry operators from the Saint Martin side

FAQ

I am staying on Sint Maarten and visiting St Barth for a day — will one plan cover both?+

Not automatically. Saint Barthélemy is its own territory as far as networks are concerned, listed separately from Dutch Sint Maarten and French Saint Martin, so a plan naming one may not include the other. Open the territory list before buying and look for every place you will actually set foot. If the plan is to sleep on one island and cross over for day trips, picking a multi-territory plan from the start is usually the simpler answer.

Should I arrive by light aircraft or by boat?+

The plane takes only minutes and suits light luggage, but it flies in daylight and seats are limited. The boat takes roughly forty-five minutes to an hour and a half depending which port it leaves from, costs less and carries more people, though it rolls on a rough day. Both get retimed by the weather, so keep the operator's number and confirmation email on your phone and leave a generous gap before any international connection at SXM.

Is there public transport or a ride-hailing app on the island?+

There are no buses and no ride-hailing app. Your options are the limited number of taxis, which you should book ahead, or a small rental car, which is what most people do. The roads are narrow and steep with several hairpins, and parking in Gustavia fills up early in the evening. Having the map open and the rental company's number saved genuinely helps, particularly on the drive back in the dark, where signposting is sparse.

When does a Saint Barthélemy eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
