How much data you actually need
About 800MB to 1.5GB a day for maps, messaging and photos, since navigation stays open a lot on the mountain roads. If you upload video every night or share a hotspot with the rest of the group, budget around 2GB a day instead.
When you land
Long-haul flights land at Hewanorra International (UVF) at Vieux Fort in the south, about ninety minutes by road up to Castries or Rodney Bay and around 45 minutes across to Soufriere. George F. L. Charles (SLU) at Castries handles regional flights. There is also the L'Express des Iles ferry from Martinique into Castries, and cruise ships berth at Pointe Seraphine.
Where coverage changes
Castries, Rodney Bay, Gros Islet, Vieux Fort and Soufriere have steady service. It thins on the Barre de l'Isle ridge road that crosses the island, in the Edmund Forest Reserve, on the climb up Gros Piton, and in the small bays along the Atlantic side where the ridges block the signal for stretches at a time.

Should I stay near the airport or up north?+
It depends on how many nights you have. For a short three or four night trip focused on the Pitons, staying around Soufriere cuts a lot of driving out of the itinerary. If you want restaurants and some nightlife, Rodney Bay in the north suits better, even though it means about ninety minutes in a car on your first and last days.
How long is the transfer from Hewanorra airport?+
Around ninety minutes to Castries or Rodney Bay on a winding mountain road, and roughly 45 minutes to an hour across to Soufriere. Book the transfer with your accommodation in advance, especially for an evening landing, and bring something for motion sickness if you are prone to it, because the route bends almost the whole way.
Is there signal on the Gros Piton climb?+
In patches rather than continuously, and the seaward side generally holds a signal better than the sheltered face. The climb has to be done with a local guide anyway, so start early to avoid the heat, tell your accommodation when you expect to be back, and download the map and anything you need before you leave Soufriere with a connection.
When does a Saint Lucia eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
