🇲🇫 Saint Martin

Saint Martin eSIM

Saint Martin is the northern, French half of an island that is split between two administrations, with Dutch Sint Maarten occupying the south. The road crosses the line without a checkpoint, so having dinner on one side and sleeping on the other is completely routine. What people forget is that as far as mobile networks are concerned the two halves are separate territories, which means a handset switches back and forth through the day without you touching anything — and that turns out to matter more than expected when choosing a plan.

How much data you actually need

Reckon on 500MB to 1.2GB a day for navigating the ring road, booking a table in Grand Case, messaging boat trips and posting in the evening. Daily video calls or uploads take that closer to 2GB a day.

When you land

The gateway for the whole island is Princess Juliana (SXM) on the Dutch side, from which you simply drive across to the French side with no border post. The French side has its own small airport, Grand Case–Espérance (SFG), handling regional flights. The sea matters too: boats leave Marigot for Anguilla and Oyster Pond for Saint Barthélemy. Switch your line on at SXM and check which side's network your handset has attached to before you leave the airport.

Where coverage changes

Coverage is solid along the coast road from Marigot through Grand Case to Orient Bay and Oyster Pond, and around the Simpson Bay lagoon that straddles the Dutch line. It thins over the central hills around Pic Paradis, the island's high point with trails cutting through the bush, on the emptier eastern beaches, and on boat runs out to the offshore cays. The spot to watch is the boundary itself, where handsets habitually reattach to the other side's network on their own.

Cities travellers ask about

  • MarigotThe main French-side town, with the market and the Anguilla ferry.
  • Grand CaseA street of restaurants where almost everything needs booking ahead.
  • Orient BayThe long eastern beach with beach bars and watersports.
  • Oyster PondA marina and the departure point for boats to Saint Barthélemy.
  • Pic ParadisThe island's central summit, with hiking trails and patchy service.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp, used by restaurants, drivers and boat trips to confirm bookings
  • Google Maps or Waze for the ring road and the crossings between the two sides
  • Booking sites for the boats to Anguilla and Saint Barthélemy from the French ports

FAQ

Do plans treat French Saint Martin and Dutch Sint Maarten as one place?+

No. Each side has its own territory code and is always listed separately, even though they share one island and you can drive between them in two minutes. If your trip touches both, check that the plan's territory list carries both names rather than one, because in practice almost nobody stays on a single side for a whole visit — the main airport is on the Dutch side to begin with.

Why does my phone keep switching networks during the day, and what should I do?+

Because towers on both sides sit close together on one small island, so the handset simply picks the stronger signal and ignores the line drawn on the map. If your plan covers both sides, leave it alone. If it covers only one, open the network settings, switch from automatic to manual selection and lock onto the network your plan supports. Signal may be weaker in a few spots as a result, but the phone will stop drifting onto a network you cannot use.

Is there a border check when crossing between the two sides?+

Crossing by road normally involves no checkpoint at all, just a sign telling you that you have entered the other side. Still carry your passport, because leaving the island by air or sea is a normal territorial departure. The other thing to remember is currency: the French side uses the euro while the Dutch side works in guilders and US dollars. Plenty of places take several currencies, but being able to check a rate on your phone stops you overpaying.

When does a Saint Martin eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
