How much data you actually need
Most visitors use around 300MB to 1GB a day for maps, messages confirming tours and rooms, and photos in the evening. If you film whale encounters and upload the clips each night, budget closer to 2GB a day, and allow more if your travel companions tether off your hotspot.
When you land
The gateway is Fuaʻamotu International (TBU) on Tongatapu, about 35km from Nukuʻalofa, with international flights from Auckland, Sydney, Nadi and Apia. Domestic connections run to Vavaʻu (VAV), Haʻapai (HPA) and ʻEua (EUA). By sea, Nukuʻalofa wharf is the real second entry point: the overnight ferry works north to Haʻapai and Vavaʻu, and a shorter crossing goes to ʻEua.
Where coverage changes
Signal is strongest around Nukuʻalofa and along the main roads of Tongatapu, and in Neiafu on Vavaʻu where the tour boats are based. In Haʻapai it is reliable around Lifuka and Pangai but often absent on the smaller islands of the same group, and the far northern Niuas — Niuatoputapu and Niuafoʻou — are remote with very limited service. Out on the water between groups there is effectively nothing, so save maps and booking confirmations to the device before every crossing.

What do I actually need data for on a Vavaʻu whale trip?+
Mostly before you board. Operators confirm departure times, or a postponement because of swell, by message on the morning itself, and some ask you to send documents or settle a deposit beforehand. Once the boat is out, signal disappears for most of the day and returns as you come back in. The safe pattern is to check messages before leaving your room and to pin the meeting point in an offline map in case the departure jetty changes.
Can I stay contactable on the overnight ferry north?+
There is usable signal leaving the wharf and again as you approach the destination, but almost nothing in the middle of the night at sea. Tell your accommodation roughly when you expect to arrive before you sail, allow for the boat docking hours later than scheduled, and save the number of whoever is collecting you directly on the phone so you can call the moment service returns rather than digging through email.
Is Tonga a cash place or a card place?+
Nukuʻalofa and Neiafu have ATMs and some places that take cards, but boat tours, markets, taxis and small guesthouses are usually paid in cash in paʻanga. Withdraw a buffer before you move on to Haʻapai or any smaller island, since machines are few and can run empty over a long weekend. Data is useful for checking a balance or reaching your bank, but it does not mean a card will be accepted where you are standing.
When does a Tonga eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
