eSIM for family trips

One eSIM profile installs on one device, so the only way several devices share a plan is through a hotspot — which means they all have to stay near the host phone, and every byte comes out of the same allowance. Before you build a plan around it, check that the package you are buying permits tethering, because that condition varies by provider.

That kind of device cannot take an eSIM at all, so the only route is tethering to a parent's phone. It works well when you are sitting together — in a car or a restaurant — and not at all when you are apart. If they will watch a lot on the move, downloading it in advance on the hotel Wi-Fi is much cheaper than streaming.

If there will be any period where they go off on their own, yes. A hotspot only reaches a short distance; once they walk beyond it the connection drops with no warning, and you cannot reach them at exactly the moment you want to. If this particular trip really keeps everyone together, sharing is enough.

The speed each device sees depends on several things at once: the network signal where you happen to be standing, how many devices are connected, and what each of them is doing. We cannot give a figure. What we can say plainly is that when several devices pull at the same time — particularly with one of them streaming video — the others will notice it slow down.

Install on all of them before you go, but not simultaneously. Do them one at a time on home Wi-Fi, confirming each phone shows the plan on its cellular settings screen before you move to the next. Going one by one tells you immediately which device has a problem instead of leaving you to work it out later.
