What Tromsø is like on a phone

Tromsø is a small island town above the Arctic Circle that nonetheless has everything you need. In winter most visitors are here to get out and look for the aurora; in summer they come for the sun that does not set and the trails on the surrounding islands. In town the line works and the hotels and restaurants cluster within walking distance. What has to be understood clearly is that the moment a tour bus leaves town along the Arctic roads, the distance between masts grows a great deal, and sub-zero air drains a battery faster than you will have experienced elsewhere.

Langnes Airport (TOS) is on the same island as the town, about ten minutes away by airport bus or taxi. Others arrive on the coastal ships that dock in the centre, or by long-distance coach from Narvik or from the Finnish side, which also means crossing a border. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft so maps and tour-booking apps are ready at once. The short ride in is connected; a cross-border coach, by contrast, spends long stretches with nothing.

On Tromsøya, where the town is, and across the bridge in Tromsdalen, the line covers everything. Drive out towards Kvaløya or north along the coast roads, though, and long multi-kilometre stretches have nothing. The tunnels under the town and through the mountains between islands are silent. Aurora tours deliberately drive far to get out from under cloud, which means hours outside coverage, and at well below freezing the battery falls so fast that power becomes the first thing to plan.

What a day here costs in data

A day in town is light, roughly 400MB to 900MB, because everything is walkable. In aurora season, though, people reopen the activity and cloud forecasts many times a day, and that mounts up. A night tour uses little data, being outside coverage, but an enormous amount of battery — carry at least one spare pack and keep the phone in a warm layer.

• Sentrum — The island's compact core, restaurants and quay within a short walk; the line is steady here, and this is where you should finish any tour booking before heading out of town.
• Tromsdalen — Across the bridge on the mainland, home to the Arctic cathedral and the cable car; the summit is open and clear, but the wind is strong enough that the battery goes quickly.
• Kvaløya — The big island to the west, where people drive for beaches and aurora viewpoints; the outer roads have long stretches with nothing, so download offline maps before you leave town.
• Langnes and Charlottenlund — The airport side and the residential streets on the same island, convenient for hire cars and early flights; the line covers the main roads throughout.

Day trips out of the city

• Aurora chasing out of town — The vehicle drives far to get out from under cloud, and long parts of the route have nothing at all. Download offline maps before you set off, and understand that an emergency call does not work the way a data session does. When the aurora can be seen varies from year to year and depends on conditions, so follow official forecast sources rather than treating any season as fixed.
• The Lyngen Alps and Sommarøy — Fjord roads and ferry crossings with multi-kilometre gaps; tell someone which way you are going. Ferry timetables are adjusted seasonally and from year to year, so check with the operator before you set out.
• Crossing to the Finnish side for clearer sky — Some tours drive across the border when the coast is under thick cloud, which means you need coverage for the other country as well. Check the covered-destination list before you travel, and confirm entry requirements against official announcements, since those are adjusted from time to time.
