An Arctic island town, an aurora base, and roads where masts are a long way apart.

Langnes Airport (TOS) is on the same island as the town, about ten minutes away by airport bus or taxi. Others arrive on the coastal ships that dock in the centre, or by long-distance coach from Narvik or from the Finnish side, which also means crossing a border. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft so maps and tour-booking apps are ready at once. The short ride in is connected; a cross-border coach, by contrast, spends long stretches with nothing.

Tromsø is a small island town above the Arctic Circle that nonetheless has everything you need. In winter most visitors are here to get out and look for the aurora; in summer they come for the sun that does not set and the trails on the surrounding islands. In town the line works and the hotels and restaurants cluster within walking distance. What has to be understood clearly is that the moment a tour bus leaves town along the Arctic roads, the distance between masts grows a great deal, and sub-zero air drains a battery faster than you will have experienced elsewhere.

On Tromsøya, where the town is, and across the bridge in Tromsdalen, the line covers everything. Drive out towards Kvaløya or north along the coast roads, though, and long multi-kilometre stretches have nothing. The tunnels under the town and through the mountains between islands are silent. Aurora tours deliberately drive far to get out from under cloud, which means hours outside coverage, and at well below freezing the battery falls so fast that power becomes the first thing to plan.
A day in town is light, roughly 400MB to 900MB, because everything is walkable. In aurora season, though, people reopen the activity and cloud forecasts many times a day, and that mounts up. A night tour uses little data, being outside coverage, but an enormous amount of battery — carry at least one spare pack and keep the phone in a warm layer.
Norway plans work country-wide, Tromsø included.

Yes, it happens: a battery delivers far less current when it is very cold, and a phone can shut off with charge apparently remaining. Keep it in a layer close to your body, take it out only to shoot, and carry a spare pack that is also kept warm. Once it warms up it usually comes back.
Usually not: the spots tours drive to are generally outside coverage, and even with a weak signal, streaming in the dark rarely produces something anyone can make sense of. Shoot clips or long exposures instead and send them once you are back at the accommodation.
Tell your accommodation or your travelling companions which operator you are out with and when you expect to be back, because you may be unreachable for a long stretch. Keep the operator's contact details saved offline, and for anything to do with emergencies take your guidance from the country's official sources rather than from hearsay.
Not the signal, but very much the user: light all night keeps people outdoors longer and shooting more than they realise, and the higher screen brightness needed in daylight costs extra power. Carry a spare pack and set a reminder for bedtime; it helps both the battery and the schedule.
