What Interlaken is like on a phone

Interlaken is a small town between two lakes that works as the base for the villages and summits above it. Visitors include families staying a few nights to go up a different mountain each day, hikers, and people who come for the air sports. The town itself is small enough to walk and has ordinary usable service. What changes is the moment you board a train or a cable car and start climbing, because narrow valleys, rock walls and long tunnels are what decide where you have a signal.

Most people arrive by train from Zurich or Bern at Interlaken Ost, which is the interchange for the valleys above. Those flying in come through Zurich (ZRH) or Geneva (GVA) and then take two to three hours of train. Switch the line on at the airport, because some onward mountain services need a reservation and their timetables shift with the season. The rail journey is good for most of the lakeside running and breaks up in the tunnels that pass under the ridges.

The town between the two lakes and the main roads are connected throughout. Once a train heads into a narrowing valley, the signal starts breaking up because rock walls on both sides block the line of sight. The mountain villages with lodgings and shops generally have usable service, while the hiking routes between one village and the next thin out or disappear in stretches. The rail tunnels that climb inside the mountain before a high station are completely silent, and it comes back strongly at the open viewpoint up top.

What a day here costs in data

A mountain day uses less than people expect, roughly 400MB to 800MB, because the hours when you most want a connection are the hours when there is least of one. What really costs is uploading video from a summit or from an air sport: big files, usually sent on the spot while the feeling is still fresh. The cheaper habit is to keep the clips and send them from the accommodation's Wi-Fi, and to download the trail map before leaving town every single time.

• The high railway station on the ridge — The climb inside the mountain tunnel is completely silent for several minutes before service returns at the platform and the viewing terraces — load your ticket before boarding.
• The ice caves and the waterfall caverns — Inside the caves there is nothing at all, being solid rock around you — agree a time to meet outside before you go in and do not rely on calling each other within.
