Cold drains a battery two to three times faster than you expect, and signal on a gondola or in the trees is nothing like signal in town. Here is how to prepare the phone and the offline maps before you go up.

Why does the battery vanish on the mountain even when I barely use the phone?+
Two things happen at once. Cold temporarily shrinks usable capacity, and weak signal makes the phone raise its transmit power trying to reach a mast, which is expensive. Switching to aeroplane mode where you already know there is no coverage helps more than people expect.
Does an eSIM work if the resort is remote?+
It works to the same degree a local SIM does, because an eSIM runs on the same networks residents use. Remoteness affects every SIM equally. What can differ is that some plans are tied to particular operators, so read the network listed on the plan page before buying.
How many gigabytes for a week of skiing?+
If the lodge has Wi-Fi and you upload video over it at night, a mid-sized plan usually covers a week. If the lodge Wi-Fi is slow or shared by a full chalet, allow more, because you will quietly fall back to mobile data. Work it out for your own style with our data calculator.
When does the Japanese ski season start and end?+
It varies every year and by resort, because it depends on the snow that actually falls. Opening and closing dates for individual lifts are announced separately too. Check the resort's own announcements before booking flights rather than assuming last year's dates.
