What Bergen is like on a phone

For most people Bergen is where a fjord trip starts, so the town is full of people sailing tomorrow and people just back from the water. It sits in a bay ringed by mountains, which puts some districts firmly in their shadow, and the weather turns fast — several waves of rain in a day is ordinary here. Around the harbour and the bay the line covers everything. Take the funicular up the mountain or a boat into the fjord, though, and the terms change completely.

Flesland Airport (BGO) is linked by the Bybanen light rail, about forty-five minutes into town and the usual choice because it stops right in the centre. The alternatives are the Bergen Railway from Oslo across the plateau into the central station, and the coastal and cruise ships that berth near Bryggen. Turn the eSIM on before you leave the aircraft or the carriage, since tram tickets are bought in the app and the machine queue at the airport is usually long. On the way in the light rail passes through several tunnels and the line breaks at intervals.

Around the bay and the harbour it works well, though districts pressed against the hillsides feel weaker than the open-water side. The light rail into town passes through several tunnels, and the road tunnels around the city are completely silent. Ride the cable car up Ulriken or the funicular up Fløyen and the viewpoints are wide open, while the ridge trails thin out quickly. Boats heading into the fjord enter long stretches where rock walls on both sides block the line.

What a day here costs in data

A day in town is about 600MB to 1.2GB, since you walk nearly everywhere and wifi is common. A fjord day behaves differently: people re-check the forecast and the sailings repeatedly before leaving, then shoot a great deal of video on the water and upload it all back at the room. Around 2GB a day covers that, and be generous with battery, because wind and damp take their share.

• Bryggen and the Vågen harbour — The row of timber warehouses that define the city's image; the open water keeps it working, but step into the narrow wooden passages behind and it weakens at once.
• Nordnes — A peninsula of low wooden houses reaching into the water; windy, but open on three sides and clear because of it, and a quiet place to stay within walking distance of the centre.
• Sandviken — The north side of the bay with its white timber warehouses; it hugs the hillside, so some streets are noticeably weaker than the open-water side.
• Nygårdshøyden and Møhlenpris — The university quarter on the rise in the middle of town: plenty of cafés to work from, a steady line, and ten minutes downhill to the harbour.

Day trips out of the city

• Flåm and the Flåm railway — The railway drops through a valley with high rock walls on both sides, and the line goes for long stretches, especially in the tunnels. Load tickets and maps before leaving Bergen and treat the middle of the journey as offline time.
• The Nærøyfjord and Aurland cruise — Where the boat enters the narrowest part of the fjord there is nothing for long periods, with rock blocking both sides. Download whatever you need beforehand. Sailings change with the season and are revised yearly, so check with the operator before planning around one.
• The Hardangerfjord and the clifftop hikes — The fjord road runs through long tunnels with nothing at all, and the clifftop walks take hours across country where masts sit far apart. Always download offline maps before setting out, and understand that emergency calling does not work the way data does — rely only on official services and the local rescue authority for that.
