What Shenzhen is like on a phone

Shenzhen grew from a small border town into a major city within one lifetime, so everything looks new: wide roads, and a metro laid out so that changing lines is easy. People come across from Hong Kong to eat and shop, to visit electronics suppliers, or for meetings. For many travellers this is the first stop on the mainland, so it is worth knowing that a travel eSIM roams onto a local network here, and that some overseas apps and websites may be unreachable unless you have made your own arrangements beforehand.

Many arrivals do not fly in at all; they walk across from Hong Kong at Lo Wu, Huanggang or Futian, which is the moment to get the mainland line working, because a Hong Kong plan usually does not cover this side. Save the hotel address in Chinese beforehand, because the minutes just after a border crossing are rushed and there is always a queue behind you.

The eastern end, against hills and bays, behaves differently: the coast roads have weak stretches and the beaches out on the headlands swing with the terrain.

What a day here costs in data

A day here runs about 1–1.5GB, and anyone working with suppliers goes further, sending product photos and short clips to the team through the day. A day trip in from Hong Kong uses far less, but you want either a plan covering both sides or two separate plans, so you are not out of contact mid-day. On a business trip the biggest single consumer is the evening video call with the office back home.

Districts travellers ask about

• Futian — The central district holding a high-speed rail station and a border crossing; dense with offices and well served, though the crossing halls are packed morning and evening, so have your documents ready on the device before joining the line.
• Nanshan — Technology firms and universities in the west, laid out in campuses larger to walk than they look; strong throughout and a practical place for daytime meetings.
• Luohu and the electronics markets — The oldest part of the city beside the Hong Kong crossing, with multi-floor market halls of tightly packed booths; the inner aisles are clearly weaker than the street, so write booth numbers down as text.
• Shekou and the bay — A bayside district in the southwest with ferries to Hong Kong and Macau; the waterfront is good, and you should check sailings and check-in requirements with the operator on the day, because timetables are adjusted.

Day trips out of the city

• The Dapeng peninsula — Beaches and an old walled village about two hours east; the hill roads have weak stretches, and while some beaches are fine, the headlands waver. On long holidays visitor numbers can be capped, so check the official notices before setting out.
• Dongguan — The factory city an hour north by intercity train; inside the larger plants the line is weaker than outside, so keep the address and your contact's name saved as text, since many sites sit on industrial lanes the map cannot pinpoint.
• Zhuhai and the Macau border — West across the bay by ferry or by road over a very long sea bridge, where the line swings in the middle of the crossing. If you plan to continue into Macau, confirm whether the plan you hold covers that area before you leave.
