American Samoa eSIM

American Samoa is a United States territory sitting deep in the South Pacific, and it is not always bundled the same way as the mainland in a phone plan — travellers are regularly surprised that the US package they already hold behaves differently here. Most of a trip stays on Tutuila, around the long inlet of Pago Pago harbour, on winding coast roads, and in a national park that is split across several islands. Data matters for maps, boat times and reaching people in the villages.

How much data you actually need

A typical visit uses about 300MB to 1GB a day for coastal road navigation, messaging and photos. If you upload hiking or snorkelling video each night, budget around 2GB a day, and more again if a rental car full of people is sharing your hotspot.

When you land

The gateway is Pago Pago International (PPG) at Tafuna on Tutuila, reached mainly from Honolulu, plus a short hop across to Apia in Samoa that also crosses the international date line. The Manuʻa Islands have small strips at Fitiuta on Taʻu and on Ofu. The other entry point is the harbour at Pago Pago, used by the occasional Manuʻa boat and by seasonal cruise calls.

Where coverage changes

Coverage is strongest around Pago Pago harbour, Fagatogo and the Tafuna area near the airport, and remains usable along the east and west coast roads. It thins where the road climbs over the ridge in the middle of Tutuila, and there are dead spots on the national park trails around Mount Alava and above Vatia. The Manuʻa Islands, roughly a hundred kilometres east, have considerably fewer services. Download the map before you leave town.

Cities travellers ask about

  • Pago PagoThe deep harbour and main port that anchors life on Tutuila.
  • FagatogoGovernment offices and the market, right beside Pago Pago harbour.
  • TafunaThe airport and shopping area, where a lot of accommodation sits.
  • VatiaNorth coast village, the way into the national park and the Pola Island view.
  • TaʻuLargest of the Manuʻa Islands, reached by light aircraft or boat.

Apps to install before you fly

  • Google Maps with Tutuila saved offline before you drive around the island
  • Facebook and Messenger, where local businesses and operators post updates
  • The airline app for your route, such as Hawaiian Airlines for the Honolulu leg
  • A weather app for rain bands and the tropical cyclone season

FAQ

Does my existing US plan automatically work in American Samoa?+

Not necessarily. Even though it is a US territory, many carriers treat American Samoa separately from the mainland in their plan terms: some include it, others bill it as roaming. The safe move is to ask your own provider before you travel whether this territory is inside your allowance, and if it is not, sort out how you will connect before departure rather than working it out at the airport.

Are entry requirements the same as for the mainland United States?+

Not entirely. American Samoa runs its own immigration separately from the rest of the United States, so the conditions for your passport can differ from the mainland rules. Check with the official authorities or an embassy before you fly, especially if the same trip continues on to Samoa or Hawaii, because each leg can carry its own set of requirements.

What should I sort out before hiking in the national park?+

Download the map around Mount Alava and the Vatia side before you start, because there are dead spots along the ridge and in the valleys. Tell your accommodation or someone you know which trail you are taking and when you expect to be back, carry enough water and battery since the humidity tires you faster than expected, and remember that much of the land belongs to villages — ask and follow the community's rules before walking in.

When does a American Samoa eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
