How much data you actually need
Most trips run about 400MB to 1GB a day: maps, messages confirming tours, and beach photos in the evening. If you go live or upload video daily, budget nearer 2GB a day, and add extra if you are tethering a laptop while working from the island.
When you land
The gateway is Rarotonga International (RAR) at Avarua, served from Auckland, Sydney and seasonal North American routes. Domestic flights continue to Aitutaki (AIT), by far the busiest hop, and to the southern group — Atiu (AIU), Mangaia (MGS), Mauke (MUK) and Mitiaro (MOI). Several international arrivals land in the middle of the night, so switch your line on at the airport to confirm the transfer your accommodation arranged.
Where coverage changes
Rarotonga has service the whole way round the ring road and across Muri. Aitutaki works well in Arutanga village and along the resort side of the island, but out in the lagoon and on the sand cays such as One Foot Island you should assume nothing. The southern outer islands have noticeably fewer services on the ground, and the northern group — Manihiki, Pukapuka and Penrhyn — lies more than a thousand kilometres away and is genuinely hard to reach. Download maps before each small-aircraft hop.

FAQ
Do I need to rent a car on Rarotonga, or is the bus enough?+
Buses circle the island in both directions and stop near most accommodation and shops along the ring road, which is enough for a lot of visitors. The limits are evenings and Sundays, when services thin out. If you plan dinners away from your side of the island or want to start an inland walk early, a car or scooter is easier. Check the current timetable online on the day, since it is adjusted seasonally.
Will a full-day Aitutaki lagoon cruise cut me off?+
Mostly yes. The boats head out to uninhabited sand cays in the middle of the lagoon, where service is very weak or absent, and it returns as you come back toward shore in the late afternoon. Deal with anything urgent before you sail, keep your ticket and the meeting time saved on the device, and bring charge to spare, because the camera and GPS drain a battery quickly in that heat.
What currency do the Cook Islands use, and are cards accepted?+
The New Zealand dollar is the working currency, alongside Cook Islands coins that circulate locally and cannot be spent once you leave, so use them up before you fly out. Rarotonga and Aitutaki have ATMs and plenty of places that take cards, but the market, the buses and many small tour operators still prefer cash. On the outer islands, carry enough cash with you, because financial services there are limited.
When does a Cook Islands eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
