What Tulum is like on a phone

Tulum has two very different sides: the beach road threading between jungle and sea, and the inland town with the shops, banks and people who live here. Travellers come for the beaches, the cenotes and the feeling of distance from any big city — and pay for it with visibly thinner infrastructure. Many beachfront properties run on generators with wobbly Wi-Fi, so your own mobile line is often the steadier of the two and ends up being the main way you stay in touch.

Most people arrive by road from Cancún (CUN), a decent run down the coast highway; the alternative is the newer airport closer by in the same region, whose flight numbers shift by season — check directly with the airlines. Turn the eSIM on while still inside the terminal so you can confirm your pickup and send your position to the property. The road into Tulum is connected nearly throughout, but the moment you turn off onto the beach road it begins to thin, so download the map before you leave the highway.

The inland town is good the length of its main road. The beach road, hemmed by jungle on both sides, is another matter: some stretches behave normally, others fall to barely enough for a message, and properties set back from the road are weaker still. Underground cenotes have no signal at all. The clifftop ruins, being open to the sky, usually work. The tracks running deep into the jungle towards the reserve include genuinely unserved stretches — download the map every time before you set off.

What a day here costs in data

A day around the beach and the restaurants usually costs little — roughly 1GB — because most of it is spent off the phone. That figure changes the instant the property's Wi-Fi fails and you fall back on mobile data for everything, video calls and evening streaming included. Set photo backup to run on Wi-Fi only and check your remaining balance periodically, because topping up late at night in a thin-signal area is not as simple here as in a large city.

• Tulum town (the pueblo) — The main road with restaurants, supermarkets and banks — the best coverage in the area and the place to finish anything you need online.
• The beach hotel road — Jungle on both sides makes the signal come and go; many properties run on generators with unreliable Wi-Fi, so save addresses and routes on the device before leaving town.
• The clifftop ruins — Open ground above the sea, so it usually has a usable line, though it slows when several tour coaches arrive together; hours and fees change yearly, so check with the managing authority.
• Akumal and the coast to the north — A small bay where people swim to see turtles; the beach line is workable but weakens away from shore, and the rules and seasons for entering the water change yearly — check with the site's wardens.

Day trips out of the city

• The Sian Ka'an reserve — The unpaved road in has long genuinely unserved stretches, and out on the lagoon it is quiet too: download maps, agree a return time with your guide, and check access conditions with the managing authority beforehand, since they change with the season.
• Cobá and the cenotes around it — The long straight road inland drops in places, and a cenote reached by ladder underground has nothing at all — pin the car park and the route home before you leave the main road.
• Bacalar and its lagoon — A long drive south with clearly thinner stretches between towns; Bacalar itself works, but out on the lagoon the line softens. Fill the tank and download the route in advance.
