What Mumbai is like on a phone

Mumbai is a city where map distances lie: the island is long and narrow, so crossing from south to north can swallow half a day at rush hour. Visitors end up checking local-train timings and live traffic more often than they check a walking route. Coverage across the city is dense and consistent, from the southern tip up through the northern suburbs. What wavers is a packed commuter carriage and anything that happens out on the water.

International flights arrive at Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (BOM); most domestic services use Terminal 1 at Santacruz, a separate building reached by a shuttle. Get the line running before you clear the baggage hall, because a lot of Mumbai arrivals land in the small hours and the taxi queue outside can be long. The drive in over the Sea Link or along the bay road holds signal throughout, so you can message the hotel with an arrival time from the car.

From Colaba up through Churchgate and along Marine Drive the signal is good almost everywhere, and so it is across the suburbs at Bandra, Andheri and Powai. The exceptions are a rush-hour commuter carriage, where you can barely get the phone out at all, and some long sheet-roofed platforms. The Elephanta ferry starts dropping about ten minutes out of the harbour and picks up again on the approach. During heavy monsoon days, roads close and the whole city refreshes the news at once, which can make an hour feel slower than usual.

What a day here costs in data

A day here runs about 1–2GB, most of it spent on maps, ride-hailing and re-checking train times before deciding how to travel at all. If you follow a live cricket match or watch something through a long traffic jam, budget nearer 3GB. Uploading the sunset set from Marine Drive every evening adds up too. Video calls home are comfortable from the room; on a ferry or in the middle of a commuter train, leave them for later.

• Colaba & Fort — The colonial-era blocks around the Gateway of India; walkable all day with a steady line, though the evening crowd at the jetty means you should name an exact meeting spot.
• Bandra West — Cafés, restaurants and the Bandstand seafront; a lot of people work out of here, so the network carries its heaviest load from afternoon into the evening.
• Andheri East — The airport-side hotel belt for onward flights; the lanes are tight and drivers call twice for directions, so drop your pin at the lobby entrance rather than on the building name.
• Dadar — The junction where the commuter lines meet, with a flower market that opens before dawn; platforms change often enough that you should read the board alongside the app.

Day trips out of the city

• Elephanta Caves — The boat from the Gateway takes about an hour; the middle of the harbour goes thin and returns near the island, and inside the rock-cut halls there is next to nothing. Note the last return sailing before you board.
• Lonavala and Khandala — Two and a half hours up the ghats on the expressway; the main road stays connected, but the viewpoints down side lanes and the monsoon waterfalls wobble with the valley.
• Alibaug — Reachable by fast ferry across the bay or the long way by road; mid-crossing the line drops out in patches, while the beaches on the far side behave normally. Buy or save the ferry ticket in advance.
